Rooted in the landscape yet gently transformed, the project reflects a sensitive approach to restoration of a rural farmhouse Rosolini / Italy / 2017
Set within the quiet countryside of Rosolini, surrounded by olive, carob and almond trees, Casa dei Granati emerges as a refined reinterpretation of a traditional early twentieth-century farmhouse. Rooted in the landscape yet gently transformed, the project reflects a sensitive approach to restoration—one that preserves memory while opening the architecture to new ways of living.
The intervention respects the constructive logic of local rural buildings: the original structure has been carefully restored using traditional techniques, while the new extensions follow the organic, incremental language typical of small agricultural settlements. Rather than imposing a new identity, the additions appear as a natural evolution of the existing, echoing the rhythm and scale of the historic fabric.
The layout unfolds as a composition of volumes anchored to pre-existing traces, where architecture and landscape engage in a continuous dialogue. New outdoor spaces are carved into the complex, extending the domestic realm into the surrounding countryside and redefining the relationship between interior and exterior. Here, thresholds become moments of transition, framing views and inviting a slower, more contemplative experience of the place.
Inside, the spaces are designed to balance conviviality and intimacy. Living areas open generously, encouraging shared moments, while more private rooms are discreetly articulated. Materials and furnishings reflect a restrained, essential aesthetic—one that resonates with the quiet simplicity of the Hyblean rural tradition. Natural textures, muted tones and handcrafted details contribute to an atmosphere that feels both timeless and grounded.
More than a restoration, Casa dei Granati embodies a cultural approach to design. The project embraces the value of existing rural heritage, reinterpreting it through the reuse of local materials and building knowledge. At the same time, it integrates contemporary energy-efficient strategies, suggesting a renewed and conscious way of inhabiting the countryside—where sustainability, memory and architecture coexist in a delicate, enduring balance.
