Milano Santa Giulia, a new urban district, is under redevelopment in the south-east of Milan, only a few kilometres from the city centre and connected to the high-speed train network and motorway. The centrepiece of the neighbourhood is a new arena, catering for sports and cultural events with up to 16,000 visitors. Echoing the elliptical form of the city’s former Roman amphitheatre, the arena gives a contemporary expression to a historical archetype and creates a place for collective entertainment. It will host large concerts, sports events and festivals and will serve as a venue for the Winter Olympic Games in early 2026. Outside of event hours, the spacious outdoor areas will provide a new opportunity for social interactions for people from the neighbourhood as well as from the whole city.

The arena, a collaboration between Arup and David Chipperfield Architects, is placed in the south of the site. Slightly rotated, it welcomes arriving guests from the west and draws visitors up a wide flight of steps onto a raised podium, occupying almost the entire site. Here a spacious piazza of over 10,000 square metres can be used as a venue for outdoor events.

On top of this monolithic podium, three rings of increasing heights appear to float one above the other, wrapping around the entire building and lending it its dynamic form. Their metallic materiality is characterised by shimmering aluminium tubes during the day and LED strips of the large-scale media integration that light up at night. The hard materiality of the podium and the arena is counterbalanced by organic green spaces with trees that extend down the staircase like a green hilly landscape.

Inside the arena, there are two tiers above the parterre level as well as an upper level with lounges and sky boxes. All seats are accessible via spacious lobbies at all levels, as are catering and service facilities. The necessary car parking spaces are located within the podium as well as in a multi-storey car park, situated in the north of the site. In addition to measures to minimise the consumption of resources and CO2 emissions, the sustainability concept includes photovoltaic systems on the roof, largely covering the needs of the energy efficient building on site.

Im Südosten Mailands, nur wenige Kilometer vom Stadtzentrum und angebunden an Hochgeschwindigkeitszugnetz und Autobahn, entsteht ein neues Stadtviertel, Milano Santa Giulia. Herzstück des Areals ist eine neue Arena, die zukünftig Platz für Sport- und Kulturveranstaltungen mit bis zu 16.000 Besucher:innen bietet. Bezugnehmend auf das ehemalige Amphitheater Mailands, interpretiert die Arena in ihrer elliptischen Form den historischen Archetyp zeitgemäß und schafft einen Ort der kollektiven Unterhaltung. Sie wird für große Konzerte, Sportveranstaltungen sowie Festivals genutzt und dient als Austragungsort der Olympischen Winterspiele 2026. Auch außerhalb der Veranstaltungszeiten werden die großzügigen Freiflächen zu einem Raum des sozialen Austauschs für Menschen aus dem Viertel und der ganzen Stadt.

Die Arena, die in Zusammenarbeit von Arup mit David Chipperfield Architects entsteht, ist im Süden des rechteckigen Grundstücks platziert. Durch ihre leichte Drehung, wendet sie sich den von Westen ankommenden Gästen zu und führt die Besucher:innen über eine breite Freitreppe auf einen erhöhten Sockel, der fast das gesamte Grundstück einnimmt. Nördlich der Arena entsteht auf dem Sockel eine weit- läufige Piazza mit mehr als 10.000 Quadratmeter Fläche, die als Ort für Freiluft-Veran- staltungen genutzt werden kann.

Auf diesem mineralischen Podest erhebt sich die Arena in Gestalt dreier unterschied- lich hoher, gleichsam übereinander schwebender Ringe. Ihre metallische Materialität prägen die tagsüber schimmernden Aluminiumröhren und die nachts leuchtenden LED-Streifen der großflächigen Medienintegration. Die auskragenden Ringe verleihen dem Gebäude seine dynamische Form. Die harte Materialität von Sockel und Arena erhält ein Gegengewicht, durch organisch gestaltete Grünflächen mit Bäumen, die sich wie eine grüne Hügellandschaft bis über die Freitreppe hinab erstrecken.

Im Inneren der Arena befinden sich über dem Parkett zwei Ränge sowie eine Ebene mit Lounges und Sky-Boxen. Großzügige Lobbys auf allen Ebenen ermöglichen Zugang zu allen Plätzen sowie Gastronomie und Serviceeinrichtungen. Im Sockel und in einem Parkhaus, das das Grundstück im Norden abschließt, befinden sich die notwendigen Pkw-Stellplätze. Das Nachhaltigkeitskonzept umfasst neben Maßnahmen zu einem minimierten Ressourcenverbrauch und CO2-Ausstoß Photovoltaikanlagen auf dem Dach, deren vor Ort erzeugte Energie den Bedarf des energiesparend gestalteten Gebäudes weitestgehend deckt.

Nella zona sud-est di Milano, a pochi chilometri dal centro della città e collegato alla rete ferroviaria ad alta velocità e all’autostrada, sorge il nuovo quartiere Milano Santa Giulia. Fulcro dell’area è la nuova arena, progettata per eventi sportivi e culturali con fino a 16.000 visitatori. Ispirandosi all’antico anfiteatro romano di Milano, la forma ellittica dell’arena reinterpreta l’archetipo storico in chiave contemporanea e crea un luogo di intrattenimento collettivo. Sarà utilizzata per grandi concerti, eventi sportivi e festival e sarà una delle sedi dei Giochi Olimpici Invernali del 2026. Anche al di fuori degli orari di apertura dell’arena, gli ampi spazi esterni creeranno opportunità di interazioni sociali per gli abitanti del quartiere e dell’intera città.

Sviluppata grazie a una collaborazione tra Arup e David Chipperfield Architects, l’arena sorge all’estremità sud del lotto rettangolare. Leggermente rotata rispetto all’asse nord-sud, essa accoglie gli spettatori provenienti da ovest e indirizza i visitatori per un’ampia scalinata fino a un podio rialzato, che occupa quasi l’intero sito. Di fronte all’arena, sul podio si estende una spaziosa piazza di oltre 10.000 metri quadrati, fruibile anche come spazio per eventi all’aperto.

Sopra il podio monolitico, l’arena si libra verso l’alto formando tre anelli di altezza crescente, che sembrano fluttuare l’uno sull’altro. La loro finitura metallica, costituita di scintillanti tubi in alluminio, ne determina l’aspetto durante il giorno, mentre di notte l’illuminazione delle strisce a LED permette effetti di luce ed integrazioni multimediali di grandi dimensioni. Gli anelli a sbalzo conferiscono all’edificio la sua forma dinamica. L’accentuata matericità del podio e dell’arena è controbilanciata dalla morbidezza delle aree verdi della piazza, disegnate con forme organiche e ricche di alberi, che si estendono fin lungo la scalinata ad evocare un verde paesaggio collinare.

Al suo interno l’arena accoglie, sopra il parterre, due livelli di gradinate e un livello con sale lounge e “sky boxes”. Tutte i posti a sedere, così come il ristorante e i servizi, sono accessibili attraverso ampi foyers presenti su tutti i piani. Le aree parcheggio necessarie sono situate sia all’interno del podio che in un parcheggio multipiano situato nella zona nord dell’area di progetto. Oltre ad ambiziose misure per contenere il consumo di risorse naturali e le emissioni di CO2, il concept per la sostenibilità prevede impianti fotovoltaici sulla copertura, che producono in loco buona parte dell’energia necessaria a coprire il fabbisogno dell’edificio.
