Reale Hospital
Located in Eldoret, Kenya, Reale Hospital is a large-scale healthcare facility designed around the relationship between treatment and recovery.

While hospitals are often perceived as a single building type, they are in fact composed of two fundamentally different environments. One part of the hospital functions as a highly technical machine dedicated to diagnosis, surgery, emergency care, and medical treatment. The other functions as a temporary place of living where patients recover, rest, and regain their physical and psychological comfort.

The architectural concept of the project emerged from this distinction.

Rather than designing a uniform façade across the entire building, the exterior expression responds directly to the internal program. Clinical and treatment spaces occupy the lower levels and are represented by a darker and more solid architectural language. Above these levels, the patient accommodation floors are wrapped by a secondary façade system composed of a repetitive wooden grid.

The wooden screen serves multiple purposes. It provides solar protection, filters daylight, improves privacy for patient rooms, and creates a softer visual identity for the accommodation floors. In contrast, the darker lower volumes express the more technical and service-oriented functions of the hospital.

Within the grid system, diagonal timber elements appear in varying positions across the façade. These diagonal members reference the structural logic of traditional timber construction, where bracing elements provide stability and rigidity. Their irregular distribution interrupts the repetition of the grid and introduces movement across the elevation.

The overall composition transforms the building from a conventional hospital block into an architecture that visibly communicates its internal organization. Instead of concealing the program behind a neutral envelope, the façade reveals the relationship between treatment spaces and healing spaces.

The project demonstrates how architectural expression can emerge directly from function. By translating the dual nature of healthcare environments into the language of the façade, Reale Hospital establishes a clear identity while improving environmental performance and patient comfort.
