At the entrance of the village Oberbozen, several townhouses situated on a hillside, with private gardens and a view of the Dolomites, were built as part of a new housing development project.

Our clients, a family of four, occupy one half of a southward looking duplex, which spreads across four floors: a subterraneous basement, a semi-subterraneous first floor with garden, a second floor with at-ground-level access to the street facing north, and an attic loft space.

The given floor plan appeared too rigid to our clients and didn’t meet their personal vision. Thus, detaching from the perpendicular would suspend the initial rigor and loosen everything up. The lady of the house also envisioned a special element in the form of an opening or window on the first floor.

Apart from reorganizing the floor plans, the interior site development of the space had to be revisited. The partially subterraneous first floor, as well as the second floor, both have external front doors on the northside of the building. The challenge was to connect these two front entrance areas on different floors through an open stairway without completely giving up the separation of common areas and private retreating spaces. Both entrances should be accessible to the family as well as guests.

The open stairway becomes a central connecting component. A coated steel plate installation leads up through the stairway’s core serving as a guardrail. Perforated areas on the plate create permeability and turn the stairway into a unifying light catcher.

On the first floor, there is a living room with a kitchen and a half bath, whereas the second-floor houses two bedrooms and a full bathroom. The first floor opens up to the south through a generous floor to ceiling window with sliding door to the garden and yard. On the west facade, a round window breaches the exterior wall. On the inside, lined with wool carpet, the window holds a cozy seating space inviting to relax. Opposite this cozy setup, there is an exposed concrete wall, in front of it a kitchen unit with a kitchen island, as well as several modular sofa pieces. A detached furniture element placed at the back of the dining area, towards the front entrance, serves as a partition that is usable on both sides. On the backside, it is a wardrobe, while on the front it offers additional dining and kitchen storage space, an espresso bar, and a chalkboard to write and draw notes for the whole family.

As for flooring, the family decided on polished exposed concrete, oak parquet, and light-gray flecked virgin wool carpet. Black and sage colored front panels dictate the appearance in the kitchen and living room. An overhanging stone slab made from Seiser basalt forms the countertop on the central kitchen island. The softness of the virgin wool carpet in the round window faces the rawness of the exposed concrete wall. A vintage rose color was chosen for the coating of the steel light catcher in the stairway.

The family wanted a home that graciously honors the diverse challenges of family life. Original floor plans were restructured to meet their need for generous common rooms with plenty of storage space on one hand, and for private rooms offering retreat and peace on the other. Moreover, transforming the stairway into a unifying light catcher ultimately added to a warm and inviting atmosphere.

All'ingresso del villaggio di Soprabolzano, sono state costruite diverse case a schiera che fanno parte di un nuovo complesso residenziale. Situate su un terreno collinare, le case bifamiliari hanno giardini privati e una splendida vista sulle Dolomiti.

La metà casa dei committenti, una famiglia di quattro persone, è esposta a sud e si sviluppa su quattro piani: la cantina interrata, un pianoterra seminterrato a livello giardino, un primo piano con accesso dalla strada a nord e il sottotetto.

Ai committenti era sembrata molto rigida la progettazione precedente e non adatta alle loro esigenze personali. Quindi è nata l'idea di abbandonare gli angoli retti per liberarsi dalla severità originaria e creare un'atmosfera più rilassata. In più la committente desiderava che un'apertura pianificata al piano terra diventasse un elemento speciale. 

Oltre alla riprogettazione delle piante, è stato necessario ripensare l'accesso interno. Il pianoterra, in parte interrato, e il primo piano dispongono tutti e due di ingressi esterni sul lato nord dell'edificio. La sfida consisteva nel collegare due aree d’ingresso distribuite su diversi piani attraverso una scala aperta all’interno della casa. Allo stesso tempo però la separazione tra la zona di giorno e quella di notte non doveva essere eliminata completamente. Entrambi gli ingressi dovevano essere ugualmente utilizzabili da abitanti ed ospiti.

La scala aperta diventa un elemento cruciale di collegamento. Una lamiera d’acciaio piegata si sviluppa verso l'alto attraversando il nucleo della scala - una scultura spaziale che funge anche da protezione anticaduta. Le perforazioni presenti creano permeabilità e trasformano la scala in un catalizzatore di luce.

Al pianoterra si trovano un soggiorno con cucina e un WC giorno, mentre il primo piano ospita due camere da letto, una stanza armadio e un bagno. Il pianoterra si apre sul giardino attraverso ampie vetrate. Sulla facciata ovest, una finestra circolare sfonda il muro esterno. Foderata con moquette di pura lana vergine, l'apertura all'interno diventa una nicchia per sedersi e rilassarsi. Di fronte, su una parete di cemento a vista, si trovano un mobile cucina con un blocco cucina antistante e diversi divanetti modulari. Verso l'ingresso, un mobile a libero posizionamento diventa un elemento divisorio che può essere utilizzato su entrambi i lati. Sul retro il mobile funge da guardaroba, mentre sul lato del soggiorno offre spazio aggiuntivo per la cucina, un bar e una lavagna di appunti per tutta la famiglia. 

Come pavimenti sono stati scelti un massetto levigato, un parquet in rovere e una moquette in lana vergine color grigio chiaro. Il nero e il verde salvia presenti nei frontali caratterizzano i mobili di cucina e soggiorno. Il blocco cucina centrale si presenta con un piano di lavoro in parte sporgente, realizzato in basalto di Siusi, varietà di una pietra naturale locale. La morbidezza della moquette sulla parete con la finestra circolare contrasta con il cemento a vista. Per il catalizzatore di luce nel giroscala è stato scelto un colore rosa chiaro. 

I proprietari desideravano una casa che corrispondesse alle loro esigenze di vita familiare. La riorganizzazione della pianta ha tenuto conto delle loro esigenze di aree comuni ampie con generosi spazi di stoccaggio, da un lato, e di ritiro, dall'altro. La trasformazione della scala in un'area di collegamento e luce ha contribuito altresì a creare un'atmosfera invitante.
