Les Chaumes | Atelier YokYok

By their presence in the middle of the forest, objects with a totemic appearance intrigue.

Upon closer inspection, one discovers a work of matter and volume. Three thatched figures seem to be waiting to be visited. You climb up, stick your head out. You transform into a giant, wearing the work like a garment.

Les Chaumes is an installation rooted in various fundamental references.

Its triptych stance in the middle of the forest showcases three volumes. Arranged like totems with organic shapes, they evoke creatures or spirits in a gathering. The whole forms a dreamlike place. A unique presence is felt. Their hairy and bulging appearance evokes animals, while the forms created by the thatch borrow their language from vernacular architecture or agriculture and its haystacks. This subtle blend of animal fur and human activity plays with the boundaries between wild life and civilization. It evokes a broader idea of clothing, the skin, the protective coat for winter, the ceremonial costume to be looked at.

Curious visitors are invited to take part in the work and experience it from the inside. One steps into the fabric to gain height and poke their head out at the top. They then experience the protective envelope.

They transform. They camouflage to rediscover their inner child in a monumental garment.

Thatch & Reuse

YokYok wanted to work with a local material available in the Rouen region: thatch. Thatch refers to the hollow stems of grasses (cereals or reeds), and by extension, the traditional roofing technique using this 100% vegetal and natural material.

To obtain reeds (the primary material for Norman thatch), YokYok practiced reuse by recovering it from a thatch roof removal site. The thatch used here is about 30 years old, and no reeds were cut specifically for this project.

Reuse which is beginning to develop in Europe is still nonexistent for some fragile materials like thatch. By highlighting such a resource, the work “Les Chaumes” contributes to valuing waste by extending the life of an already economical, noble, natural, and biodegradable material.

The fragile and ephemeral work, like a hut, respectfully integrates into a natural and forested environment. It is expected to last for two years for the Forêt Monumentale event. YokYok and Rouen Metropole invite everyone to come and experience it without damaging it.

The wooden structure was made from boards assembled and cut into curved profiles in a workshop in Eure (a neighboring department). It is painted with flour paint (or Swedish paint), made in the workshop from natural products (flour, linseed oil, black soap, iron sulfate, and natural pigments), providing effective outdoor protection for the wood against moisture, insects, and fungi.

The secondary structure is made of split bamboo fixed around the wooden structure with natural sisal twine.

Finally, the reused thatch was recovered in bundles of reeds with the help of a thatcher. The reed stems were trimmed and then placed from bottom to top allowing for waterproofing.

YokYok fabricated several tools to create Les Chaumes: curve protractor, flexible ruler, square triangle, structure trailer, shuttles, wooden needles, etc.

Par leur présence au milieu de la forêt, des objets à l’allure totémique interpellent.

A l’approche, on découvre une oeuvre en matière et en volume. Trois silhouettes en chaume semblent attendre d’être visitées.

On y monte, on sort sa tête. On se transforme en géant, on porte l’oeuvre comme un habit.

Les Chaumes est une installation qui plonge ses racines dans diverses références fondamentales. Sa posture, en triptyque au milieu de la forêt met en scène trois volumes. Disposés comme des totems aux formes organiques, ils évoquent des créatures ou des esprits en conciliabule. L’ensemble forme un lieu onirique. On sent une présence singulière. Leur aspect poilu et ventru évoque l’animal tandis que les formes générées par le chaume empruntent leur langage à l’architecture vernaculaire ou à l’agriculture et ses meules de foin. Ce mélange subtil entre pelage animal et activité humaine joue avec les frontières entre vie sauvage et civilisation. Il convoque une idée plus large qui est celle de l’habit, la peau, le manteau protecteur pour passer l’hiver, le costume d’apparat pour être regardé.

Les curieuses et les curieux sont invité•e•s à prendre part à l’oeuvre et à vivre celle-ci de l’intérieur. On vient prendre une place laissée libre. On entre dans l’étoffe pour prendre de la hauteur et passer la tête à son sommet. On fait alors l’expérience de l’enveloppe protectrice. On se métamorphose. On se camoufle pour retrouver son âme d’enfant dans un habit monumental.

Chaume & ré-emploi YokYok a voulu travailler avec un matériau local et disponible dans la région de Rouen : Le chaume. Le chaume désigne les tiges creuses des graminées (céréales ou roseaux), et par extension la technique architecturale de toiture traditionnelle qui utilise ce matériau 100% végétal et naturel. Pour se procurer du roseau (matière première du chaume normand) YokYok a pratiqué le ré-emploi en le récupérant auprès d’un chantier de dépose de toiture. Le chaume utilisé a donc ici environ 30ans d’âge, et aucun roseau n’a été coupé spécifiquement pour ce projet.

Le ré-emploi qui commence à se développer en Europe est encore inexistant pour certains matériaux fragiles comme le Chaume. En mettant à l’honneur une telle ressource, l’oeuvre ‘’Les Chaumes’’ contribue à valoriser un déchet en prolongeant la vie d’un matériau déjà économique, noble, naturel, et bio-dégradable. L’oeuvre fragile et éphémère, à l’image de la cabane, vient s’insérer avec respect dans un milieu naturel et forestier. Elle devra tenir 2 ans pour la manifestation Forêt Monumentale. YokYok et Rouen Métropole invitent toutes et tous à venir en faire l’expérience et à en profiter sans l’abîmer.

La structure bois a été fabriquée à partir de planches assemblées et découpées en profils courbes dans un atelier de l’Eure (département voisin). Elle est peinte à la peinture à la farine (ou peinture suédoise), fabriquée en atelier à partir de produits naturels (farine, huile de lin, savon noir, sulfate de fer et pigments naturels) elle permet une protection efficace du bois en extérieur contre l’humidité, les insectes et les champignons. La structure secondaire est constituée de bambous fendus fixés autour de la structure bois avec de la ficelle végétale de sisal. Enfin le chaume de ré-emploi a été récupéré sous forme de bottes de roseaux avec l’aide d’un artisan chaumier. Le tiges de roseau ont étés retaillées puis posées de bas en haut pour permettre l’étanchéité de la couverture.

YokYok a fabriqué plusieurs outils pour réaliser les Chaumes : rapporteur de courbe, règle souple, triangle équerre, remorque à structures, navettes, aiguilles en bois…etc.
