Refurbishment of apartment in Milan, 2023 - 150 sqm

The project by Marcante-Testa in Milan involves the renovation of a top-floor apartment in a building designed by the engineer architect Roberto Carlo Dell'Acqua in 1927, located in Via De Togni, not far from the well-known "typical houses" designed by Gio Ponti a few years later. The apartment, purchased by a professional couple with a child, presented significant challenges to the designers due to its low ceiling height and few windows in the entire attic portion facing the inner courtyard. 

The approach to the project primarily focuses on the architectural dimension, involving the modification of the roof and the creation of "pocket" terraces with large French doors to provide livability and natural light to the new spaces designated for bathrooms and the kitchen. The spatial diversity within the apartment, dividing it into two distinct zones in terms of height, ceiling type, and views, led the designers to the idea of creating custom-designed doors in the central corridor to separate the sleeping area and a wooden oak veneer divider to replace the masonry. These portals, capable of opening and closing to frame perspectives, establish a flexible spatial relationship between areas like the living room with the kitchen and the entrance with the corridor.

In this way, the entry space into the apartment can become an additional isolated study room for the clients' remote work, while the kitchen benefits from a view of the terrace in the living area that appears to "float" above the canopy of the trees in the park below. 

The influence of Umberto Riva, a designer greatly admired by Andrea Marcante and Adelaide Testa since their university studies, is evident in their particular attention to relationships with outdoor spaces and the design of certain typological elements of interior architecture that are closely integrated with custom-made furnishings. Starting with the door-windows on the new terraces, the project frames the external landscape from floor to ceiling, then generates the design of specific furnishings like the desk and entrance shelves, as well as the development of the kitchen. Similarly, the wall-paneling in the living room selects and emphasizes the relationship with the terrace and the park's trees. In the project, some historical decorative elements such as William Morris' floral pattern wallpapers relate to the park.

This project by Marcante and Testa demonstrates, as taught by Umberto Riva, the intention to make furnishings interact with architectural space. Architecture generates the idea of furnishings, not the other way around. Architecture becomes an indispensable tool for framing and orienting visual perspectives within spaces and towards the outside, achieving a careful balance between materials, colors, furnishings, and contemporary living forms.

Le projet de Marcante-Testa à Milan implique la rénovation d'un appartement au dernier étage d'un immeuble conçu par l'architecte-ingénieur Roberto Carlo Dell'Acqua en 1927, situé Via De Togni, non loin des célèbres "maisons typiques" conçues par Gio Ponti quelques années plus tard. L'appartement, acheté par un couple professionnel avec un enfant, présentait des défis importants pour les concepteurs en raison de sa hauteur sous plafond réduite et du peu de fenêtres dans toute la partie mansardée donnant sur la cour intérieure.

L'approche du projet se concentre principalement sur la dimension architecturale, impliquant la modification du toit et la création de terrasses "encastrées" avec de grandes portes-fenêtres pour offrir habitabilité et lumière naturelle aux nouveaux espaces destinés aux salles de bains et à la cuisine. La diversité spatiale au sein de l'appartement, le divisant en deux zones distinctes en termes de hauteur, de type de plafond et de vues, a conduit les concepteurs à l'idée de créer des portes sur mesure dans le couloir central pour séparer la zone de couchage et un séparateur en placage de chêne pour remplacer la maçonnerie. Ces portails, capables de s'ouvrir et de se fermer pour encadrer des perspectives, établissent une relation spatiale flexible entre des espaces tels que le salon avec la cuisine et l'entrée avec le couloir.

De cette manière, l'espace d'entrée de l'appartement peut devenir une pièce de travail isolée supplémentaire pour le travail à distance des clients, tandis que la cuisine bénéficie d'une vue sur la terrasse dans la zone de vie qui semble "flotter" au-dessus de la canopée des arbres du parc en dessous.

L'influence d'Umberto Riva, un designer grandement admiré par Andrea Marcante et Adelaide Testa depuis leurs études universitaires, est évidente dans leur attention particulière aux relations avec les espaces extérieurs et la conception de certains éléments typologiques de l'architecture intérieure étroitement intégrés aux meubles sur mesure. À commencer par les portes-fenêtres des nouvelles terrasses, le projet encadre le paysage extérieur du sol au plafond, puis génère la conception de meubles spécifiques tels que le bureau et les étagères d'entrée, ainsi que le développement de la cuisine. De même, le lambris mural dans le salon sélectionne et met en valeur la relation avec la terrasse et les arbres du parc. Dans le projet, certains éléments décoratifs historiques tels que les papiers peints à motifs floraux de William Morris font écho au parc.

Ce projet de Marcante et Testa démontre, comme enseigné par Umberto Riva, l'intention de faire interagir les meubles avec l'espace architectural. L'architecture génère l'idée des meubles, et non l'inverse. L'architecture devient un outil indispensable pour encadrer et orienter les perspectives visuelles à l'intérieur des espaces et vers l'extérieur, atteignant un équilibre soigné entre les matériaux, les couleurs, les meubles et les formes de vie contemporaines.

“Cornici Architettoniche”

Ristrutturazione di appartamento a Milano, 2023 - 150 mq

Il progetto di Marcante-Testa a Milano riguarda la ristrutturazione di un appartamento all’ultimo piano di un immobile progettato dall’ingegnere architetto Roberto Carlo Dell’Acqua nel 1927 e sito in Via De Togni poco distante dalle note “case tipiche” di Gio Ponti costruite alcuni anni dopo.

L’appartamento, acquistato da una coppia di professionisti con un figlio, si presenta ai progettisti con forti criticità dovute all’altezza ridotta e poche finestrature di tutta la parte mansardata prospiciente la corte interna.
L’approccio al progetto è quindi in primis rivolto alla dimensione architettonica, con la modifica del tetto e la creazione di terrazzini a “tasca” con ampie portefinestre in grado di dare vivibilità e luce naturale ai nuovi locali destinati ai bagni e alla cucina.

La diversità spaziale degli ambienti, che divide l’appartamento in due zone distinte per altezza, tipologia di soffitto e affacci, suggerisce ai progettisti l’idea di creare nel corridoio centrale delle porte su disegno a chiusura della zona notte e un elemento divisorio in legno di rovere con impiallacciatura incrociata a sostituzione delle murature. Attraverso dei portali in grado di aprirsi e chiudersi per incorniciare le prospettive si mettono in una relazione spaziale flessibile ambienti come il soggiorno con la cucina e l’ingresso con il corridoio.
In questo modo, lo spazio di entrata nell’appartamento può quindi diventare un’ulteriore stanza studio isolata per il lavoro in remoto dei clienti, mentre la cucina beneficiare della vista sul terrazzo della zona giorno che sembra “galleggiare” sulla chioma degli alberi del Parco delle Stelline sottostante.

E’ la lezione di Umberto Riva, progettista molto amato da Andrea Marcante e Adelaide Testa sin dall’epoca degli studi universitari, a influenzare una particolare attenzione alle relazioni con lo spazio esterno e al disegno di alcuni elementi tipologici dell’architettura degli interni fortemente integrati con l’arredo su misura.

Partendo dagli imbottì delle portefinestre sui nuovi terrazzini, il progetto incornicia il paesaggio esterno da soffitto a pavimento per poi generare il disegno di arredi specifici come la scrivania e le mensole all’ingresso, così come sviluppo della cucina.
Con un processo analogo la parete-boiserie contenitiva del soggiorno seleziona ed enfatizza il rapporto con il terrazzo e con gli alberi del parco a cui si relazionano nel progetto alcuni elementi decorativi di carattere storico, come le carte da parati a motivo floreale di William Morris.
Emerge in questo progetto di Marcante e Testa, come insegnato da Umberto Riva, la volontà di far dialogare gli arredi con lo spazio architettonico.
L’architettura genera l’idea degli arredi e non viceversa, è l’architettura che diventa strumento indispensabile per incorniciare e orientare le prospettive visive all’interno degli spazi, ma anche verso l’esterno in un attento equilibrio tra i materiali, i colori, l’arredo e le forme dell’abitare contemporaneo.
