Rodrigues Sampaio Apartment | Manuel Tojal | Architecture

When this project was comissioed to us, we immediately felt the enormous responsibility associated with the fact that the apartment was practically in its original state.

The apartment, with its typical typology and distribution of the time, had the kitchen and dining room on the back side and the social area facing the main street on the opposite side. All areas were served by an extensive corridor that allowed a transversal connection between the front and back of the apartment, where in the center a lobby illuminates the two bedrooms.
When faced with this renovation and taking into account that the program fit into the existing plan, we found it interesting to risk and maintain the apparent “schizophrenia” of the distribution of spaces from the original period, associated with an improvement in spatial and habitability conditions.

As a principle of intervention, it was decided to maintain the original character of the apartment, but with a sense of uniformity and connection between the spaces, reinforced by the fact that all spaces have different designs and types of flooring.

In this way, the various spaces that made up the social area were opened and assumed as one, with passageways or beams marking the existing spaces. The library area, despite being open to the living room, was framed in a gap, to take on the difference in the privacy of the space and also act as “a painting” for those in the living room. A W.C to support visitors was also introduced in the spatial reorganization of the apartment and the existing one was now integrated into the suite. The entrance hall has been taken over and through pivoting doors it can be entirely closed or opened. The kitchen remained one of the most exceptional spaces in the house, making a more direct connection to the dining room, also extending to the balcony and exterior.

A single material (Lioz) and a single color (Terracotta) are responsible for standardizing the apartment and bringing a new identity without losing the essence of other times.

Este projeto de remodelação, de um apartamento do início do Séc.XX, situa-se num edifício entre o icónico Diário de Notícias e a Igreja do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, na Rua Rodrigues Sampaio.

Ao nos ser entregue este projeto, sentimos desde logo a enorme responsabilidade associada ao facto do apartamento se encontrar praticamente no seu estado original.
O apartamento com a sua tipologia e distribuição típicas da época tinha do lado tardoz a cozinha e sala de jantar e no lado oposto a área social voltada para a rua principal. Todas as áreas eram servidas por um extenso corredor que permitia ligação transversal entre frente e tardoz da casa, onde ao centro um saguão ilumina os dois quartos.

Ao nos deparamos com esta disposição e tendo em conta que o programa se encaixava na planta existente, achámos interessante arriscar e manter a “esquizofrenia” aparente da distribuição dos espaços da época original, associada a uma melhoria das condições espaciais e de habitabilidade.

Como principio de intervenção, decidiu-se manter o caráter original do apartamento, mas com um sentido de uniformidade e ligação entre os espaços, reforçada pelo facto de todos os espaços terem desenhos e tipos de pavimento diferentes.

Deste modo os vários espaços que compunham a área social foram abertos e assumidos como um só sendo que os vãos de passagem ou vigas vão marcando os espaços existentes. A área da biblioteca apesar de aberta à sala foi enquadrada num vão, para assumir a diferença na privacidade do espaço e também assumir-se como “um quadro” para quem está na sala de estar. Foi também introduzida na reorganização espacial da apartamento uma instalação sanitária de apoio às visitas e a já existente passou a ser integrada na suite. O Hall de entrada foi mais assumido e através de portas pivotantes pode ser inteiramente fechado ou aberto. A cozinha manteve-se como um dos espaços mais excecionais da casa, fazendo uma ligação mais direta à sala de jantar, estendendo-se também à varanda e exterior.

Um único material (Lioz) e uma única cor (Terracota) têm a responsabilidade de uniformizar o apartamento e de trazer uma nova identidade sem perder a essência de outros tempos.
