THREE CORTEN BOXES 

What surprises you the first time you enter the Cour de l'Etoile d'Or is the contrast between the urban and mineral character of the suburb and the bucolic, green nature of the courtyard. Passing through the gate feels like entering another world, a closed-off space where the sound, materials, and sense of time are entirely different from the surrounding city's bustle.

Our proposal is primarily contextual, aiming, with a resolutely contemporary vocabulary, to enhance the site's positive features and address its negative aspects. The project’s development takes into account each quality that shapes the site's “spirit”: the layering of successive buildings, the juxtaposition of varied typologies, the patina of dense materials, the careful management of privacy despite the high density, and the encroachment of vegetation over the mineral surfaces.

Rather than creating a continuous building front in line with the neighboring house, the structure is made up of three juxtaposed volumes that respect the alignment of the adjoining buildings, forming an alternating composition of solid and open spaces. This crisscross arrangement enhances the views and light intake for both neighboring constructions, and the fragmented built form reflects, through its successive additions and transformations, the history of the site. Here, more than elsewhere, there is a sense of necessity to use dense materials to engage with the stones of the cobblestones and old masonry, which, like lime plaster, can acquire a patina and record the passage of time on their surface. All volumes are thus clad in Corten steel, whose color harmonizes particularly well with the surrounding vegetation. The solid steel surfaces alternate with large fixed and opening glass windows framed in steel, treated similarly to the self-patinating steel in which they are embedded.

TROIS BOITES EN CORTEN 

Ce qui surprend la première fois que l’on pénètre dans la Cour de l’Etoile d’Or, c’est le contraste entre le caractère urbain et minéral du faubourg et celui bucolique et végétal de la Cour. On a l’impression, en franchissant le porche, de changer de monde, de pénétrer dans un univers clos dont la sonorité, les matières et la temporalité sont en totale rupture avec l’agitation de la ville environnante.

Notre proposition se veut avant tout contextuelle en cela qu’elle vise, dans un vocabulaire résolument contemporain, à renforcer les caractéristiques positives du site et contrer ses aspects négatifs. L‘élaboration du projet prend en compte chacune des qualités qui forment le « génie » du lieu : la sédimentation d’édifications successives et la juxtaposition de typologies variées, la patine de matières denses, la gestion de l’intimité malgré une forte densité et la colonisation du minéral par le végétal.

Plutôt que constituer un front bâti continu dans le prolongement de la maison voisine, la maison est constituée de l’assemblage de trois volumes juxtaposés qui respectent l’alignement des bâtiments mitoyens formant une composition alternée de pleins et de vides. Cette disposition en chiasme améliore les vues et les apports de lumière des deux constructions voisines et la fragmentation du volume bâti témoigne, à travers ses additions et ses transformations successives, de l’histoire du site. Ici plus qu’ailleurs, on ressent la nécessité de recourir à des matériaux denses pour dialoguer avec les pierres des pavés et des anciennes maçonneries, qui puissent, comme les enduits à la chaux, se patiner et inscrire le temps à même leur surface. L’intégralité des volumes sont donc revêtus par de l’acier Corten, dont la couleur s’harmonise particulièrement bien avec les teintes des végétations environnantes. Les parties opaques en acier alternent avec de grandes baies vitrées fixes et ouvrantes composées de châssis en acier recevant un traitement similaire à celui de l’acier auto-patinable dans lequel ils s’insèrent.
