Brighton / Australia / 2024
This recently completed home in Brighton is a testament to thoughtful design that balances heritage charm with modern functionality. Close to the water, the brief was to create a humble, light-filled sanctuary for a young entrepreneur and her dogs — a retreat where she could escape the hustle of Melbourne life, find inspiration for her business, and enjoy a sense of calm. The client’s love for the beach, cosy environments, and the relaxed atmosphere of Byron Bay were key influences throughout the design.
Design:
The space is a celebration of texture, form, and warm, natural materials. A front heritage room retains its original character with a beautifully restored fireplace mantle, complemented by playful furniture and a mix of travertine, limestone, and silver accents. The chevron flooring in this area adds a dynamic yet timeless element, grounding the space with its unique pattern. Skylights in the hallway bring an abundance of natural light, bouncing off the polished render walls to create a soft, airy flow through the home.
The design also cleverly balances openness with privacy. A large, open-plan kitchen forms the heart of the home, seamlessly connecting to a modern extension that opens to a tranquil courtyard. This space encourages both social interaction and solitude. Subtle elements, like the hidden pantry, ensure practicality without compromising on the home’s sense of calm.
Features and Details:
Special attention was paid to the detailing of custom elements, ensuring that every aspect of the design contributed to the home’s overall aesthetic and function. The kitchen boasts a range hood designed with a new sprayed metal finish, bringing an innovative touch to the space. Custom cabinetry handles were thoughtfully chosen to reflect the home’s refined vibe, while the kitchen’s splash back shelf features subtle bullnoses for added texture.
The master ensuite also showcases carefully crafted details, with a custom concrete basin — a challenging piece to design and install but one that adds both style and practicality to the space. This unique feature, alongside the clever mix of materials, contributes to the home’s luxurious but gentle atmosphere.
Working within the client’s budget was a priority, requiring careful sourcing of materials at various price points without compromising the home's luxurious feel. The result is a beautifully curated space where every design decision is a balance of quality, craftsmanship, and style.
