Children’s dreams, built sustainably

The completion of the new kindergarten in Kiens marks a construction milestone for the future of the community. The new two-storey building, which replaces the old kindergarten, offers space for two separate groups and a daycare centre for up to 20 children. A special highlight of the project is the children’s canteen, which caters not only for the kindergarten children but also for the pupils of the neighbouring primary school. The new timber construction, with its façade colour inspired by the church tower, blends harmoniously into the existing structure of the town centre and offers the youngest residents of Kiens/Chienes a safe, friendly and mindfully designed environment.

From dream to reality
The construction project was developed in a central location in Kiens/Chienes, on the site of the old kindergarten, and was realised as part of the municipality’s plans to modernise the existing infrastructure. Its location between the primary school, the underground music rehearsal room and opposite the village hall makes the kindergarten an integral part of village life. To compensate for the height difference of around four metres between the schoolyard and the upper level of the kindergarten, an external zigzag ramp was constructed which provides step-free access to the kindergarten connecting the kindergarten to the upper half of the village and, in particular, to the church.

Space and light
The layout of the kindergarten has been specially tailored to the children. The ground floor houses the cloakroom, a movement room and a spacious entrance hall, which serves as a central, flexibly usable break, play and assembly area. A separate entrance leads directly to the children’s canteen, so that primary school children can enter the cafeteria without disturbing kindergarten activities. In addition, a kiosk has been integrated that serves as a supply point for events in the schoolyard and connects the outdoor area with the kitchen. On the upper floor, there are two group rooms, four different studios and the daycare centre, all of which face the garden. Generous window areas let in plenty of daylight and create a bright, friendly atmosphere. Almost all group rooms have direct access to the outdoor areas, which are partially covered so that they can be used even in bad weather. The daycare centre consists of two group rooms, a quiet room, a staff room, a kitchenette and the washrooms. The separate outdoor area is specially designed for toddlers. The green spaces on the upper floor will be kept as a free play area and offer the children additional space for movement and development.

Architectural design
The partially subterranean ground floor was constructed in concrete. Above it, the upper floor rises in a wooden construction made of cross-laminated timber panels, with an ecologically and aesthetically pleasing green roof. Generous windows on the exterior façades and the internal atrium ensure optimal natural lighting and create a bright, inviting atmosphere inside. The façades are characterised by a clear, modern design language and a reduced choice of materials. The wooden façades of the upper floor are painted in a warm reddish brown, inspired by the colour of the church tower and the façade cladding of the neighbouring community centre. On the ground floor, the granite cladding blends harmoniously into the surroundings, continuing the natural stone wall of the adjacent music rehearsal room and picking up on the encircling terrain. Inside the building, birch wood characterises the rooms: from the doors to the wooden panelling of the acoustic ceilings, to the oiled wooden floors and the custom-made solid wood furniture. This natural colour pallet and materiality create a child-friendly, safe and bright atmosphere.

Underscored by sustainability and safety
In addition to the architectural beauty of the building, particular emphasis was placed on sustainability of the materials and safety of the environment. The entire building was constructed to the Klimahaus/ CasaClima A standard. Heating is provided by a free-standing air-water heat pump. In addition, controlled ventilation with heat recovery ensures fresh air and a pleasant indoor climate. Photovoltaic panels generate electricity and are integrated into the green roof. The construction was financed by the EU-funded National Recovery Plan (PNRR) and therefore had to be planned according to the DNSH principle which focuses on the sustainable development goals and doing no harm. Another key issue for the project was to ensure protection against radon, a natural gas that occurs in higher concentrations in the region. To protect the children and staff, comprehensive structural measures were taken. A solid reinforced concrete floor slab, combined with foam glass panels and a radon sealing membrane, prevents radon from entering the building. These measures were implemented with great care and ensure the highest level of safety.

Mindful architecture
The new kindergarten and daycare centre in Kiens/Chienes is a building that interacts perfectly with its surroundings and offers children a creative environment in which they can enjoy freedom of movement, conscious learning and safety.

Gebaute Kinder(t)räume

Mit der Fertigstellung des neuen Kindergartens in Kiens wurde ein baulicher Meilenstein für die Zukunft der Gemeinde gesetzt. Der zweigeschossige Neubau, der den alten Kindergarten ersetzt, bietet Platz für zwei Gruppen und eine Kindertagesstätte für 20 Kinder. Ein besonderes Highlight des Projekts ist das integrierte Kinderrestaurant, das nicht nur den Kindergartenkindern, sondern auch Schüler: innen der benachbarten Grundschule verpflegt. Der neue Holzbau, dessen Fassadenfarbe vom Kirchturm inspiriert wurde, fügt sich harmonisch in die bestehende Struktur des Ortskerns ein und bietet den Kleinsten von Kiens eine sichere, freundliche und kindgerechte Umgebung.

Von der Idee zur Realität
Das Bauprojekt entstand in zentraler Lage von Kiens, auf dem Gelände des alten Kindergartens, und wurde im Rahmen der Pläne der Gemeinde zur Modernisierung der bestehenden Infrastruktur realisiert. Die Lage zwischen der Grundschule, dem unterirdischen Musikprobelokal und gegenüber dem Vereinshaus macht den Kindergarten zu einem integralen Bestandteil des Dorflebens. Um den Höhenunterschied von rund vier Metern zwischen dem Schulhof und dem oberen Niveau des Kindergartens auszugleichen, wurde außen eine zickzackförmige Rampe gebaut. Diese ermöglicht einen barrierefreien Zugang zur Kindertagesstätte, und ist eine wichtige Verbindung zur oberen Dorfhälfte und vor allem zur Kirche.

Durchdachtes Raumkonzept
Die Raumaufteilung des Kindergartens ist optimal auf die Bedürfnisse der Kinder abgestimmt. Im Erdgeschoss befinden sich Garderobe, Bewegungsraum und eine großzügige Eingangshalle, die als zentraler, flexibel nutzbarer Pausen-, Spiel- und Verteilerbereich dient. Ein separater Zugang führt direkt zum Kinderrestaurant, so dass die Grundschulkinder die Mensa betreten können, ohne den Kindergartenbetrieb zu stören. Zusätzlich wurde ein Kiosk integriert, der als Versorgungspunkt bei Veranstaltungen auf dem Schulhof dient und den Außenbereich mit dem Küchenbereich verbindet. Im Obergeschoss befinden sich zwei Gruppenräume, vier unterschiedliche Ateliers und die Kindertagesstätte, die sich alle zum Garten hin orientieren. Großzügige Fensterflächen lassen viel Tageslicht herein und schaffen eine helle, freundliche Atmosphäre. Fast alle Gruppenräume haben direkten Zugang zu den Außenbereichen, die teilweise überdacht sind und so auch bei schlechtem Wetter genutzt werden können. Die Kindertagesstätte besteht aus zwei Gruppenräumen, einem Ruheraum, einem Personalraum, einer Teeküche und den notwendigen sanitären Anlagen. Der eigene, abgetrennte Außenbereich ist speziell auf die Bedürfnisse der Kleinkinder ausgerichtet. Die Grünflächen im Obergeschoss bleiben als Freispielfläche erhalten und bieten den Kindern zusätzlichen Raum für Bewegung und Entfaltung.

Architektonische Gestaltung
Das teilweise unterirdische Erdgeschoss wurde in Beton ausgeführt. Darüber erhebt sich das Obergeschoss in Holzbauweise aus Brettsperrholzplatten mit einem ökologisch und ästhetisch überzeugenden Gründach. Großzügige Fensteröffnungen an den Außenfassaden und zum internen Lichthof sorgen für eine optimale natürliche Belichtung und schaffen eine helle, einladende Atmosphäre im Inneren. Die Fassaden zeichnen sich durch eine klare, moderne Formensprache und eine reduzierte Materialwahl aus. Die Holzfassaden des Obergeschosses sind in einem einem warmen Rotbraun getüncht, inspiriert von der Farbe des Kirchturms und der Fassadenverkleidung des benachbarten Vereinshauses. Im Erdgeschoss fügt sich die Granitsteinverkleidung harmonisch in die Umgebung ein, indem sie die Natursteinmauer des angrenzenden Musikprobelokals fortführt und den Geländesprung aufgreift. Im Inneren des Gebäudes prägt Birkenholz die Räume: von den Türen über die Holzverschalung der Akustikdecken bis hin zu den geölten Holzböden und den maßgefertigten Massivholzmöbeln. Diese natürliche Materialität schafft im Zusammenspiel mit sanften Farbtönen ein kindgerechtes, geborgenes Ambiente.

Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit im Fokus
Neben der architektonischen Schönheit des Gebäudes wurde besonderer Wert auf Nachhaltigkeit und Sicherheit gelegt. Das gesamte Gebäude wurde im Klimahausstandard A errichtet. Die Beheizung erfolgt über eine freistehende Luft-Wasser-Wärmepumpe. Zusätzlich sorgt eine kontrollierte Lüftung mit Wärmerückgewinnung für frische Luft und ein angenehmes Raumklima. Auf dem Gründach sind Photovoltaikpanele für die Stromgenerierung integriert. Der Bau wurde aus dem mit EU-Mitteln geförderten Nationalen Wiederaufbauplan PNRR finanziert und musste daher nach dem missionsübergreifenden DNSH-Prinzip (do not significant harm) geplant werden. Ein weiteres zentrales Thema des Projekts war der Schutz vor Radon, einem natürlichen Gas, das in der Region in höheren Konzentrationen vorkommt. Um die Kinder und das Personal zu schützen, wurden umfassende bauliche Maßnahmen ergriffen. Eine massive Bodenplatte aus Stahlbeton, kombiniert mit Schaumglasplatten und einer Radondichtungsbahn, verhindert das Eindringen von Radon in das Gebäude. Diese Maßnahmen wurden mit großer Sorgfalt umgesetzt und gewährleisten ein Höchstmaß an Sicherheit.

Architektur, die funktioniert und wirkt
Mit dem neuen Kindergarten und der Kindertagesstätte in Kiens ist ein Gebäude entstanden, das perfekt mit seiner Umgebung interagiert und den Kindern ein kreatives Umfeld bietet, in dem sie sich gerne bewegen, gemeinsam lernen und unbeschwert aufwachsen können.

Spazi (e sogni) costruiti per bambini
Con il completamento del nuovo asilo di Chienes, è stata posta una pietra miliare per il futuro del comune. Il nuovo edificio a due piani, che sostituisce il vecchio asilo, offre spazio per due gruppi e un asilo nido per 20 bambini. Un aspetto particolarmente rilevante del progetto è il ristorante per bambini integrato, che serve non solo i bambini dell’asilo, ma anche gli alunni della vicina scuola elementare. La nuova struttura in legno, il cui colore della facciata si ispira al campanile, si integra armoniosamente nella struttura esistente del centro del paese e offre ai più piccoli di Chienes un ambiente sicuro, accogliente e a misura di bambino.

Dall'idea alla realtà
Il progetto è stato realizzato in una posizione centrale a Chienes, sul terreno del vecchio asilo, nell'ambito dei piani comunali per la modernizzazione delle infrastrutture esistenti. La posizione, tra la scuola elementare, la sala prove musicale sotterranea e di fronte alla casa delle associazioni, rende l’asilo parte integrante della vita del paese. Per superare il dislivello di circa quattro metri tra il cortile della scuola e il piano superiore, è stata costruita all’esterno una rampa a zig-zag, che consente un accesso senza barriere sia all’asilo che all’asilo nido, costituendo un importante collegamento con la parte alta del paese, soprattutto con la chiesa.

Concetto spaziale
La distribuzione degli spazi dell’asilo è stata pensata per soddisfare le esigenze dei bambini. Al piano terra si trovano il guardaroba, la sala movimento e un ampio atrio, che funge da area centrale flessibile per pause, giochi e collegamenti. Un accesso separato porta direttamente al ristorante per bambini, in modo che gli alunni possano accedere alla mensa senza disturbare le attività dell’asilo. Inoltre, è stato integrato un chiosco che serve come punto di ristoro durante gli eventi nella piazza e collega l’area esterna con la cucina.
Al primo piano si trovano due aule, quattro diversi atelier e l’asilo nido, tutti orientati verso il giardino. Ampie finestre permettono l’ingresso di molta luce naturale, creando un’atmosfera luminosa e accogliente. Quasi tutte le aule hanno accesso diretto alle aree esterne, parzialmente coperte, che possono essere utilizzate anche in caso di maltempo.
L’asilo nido è composto da due aule, una sala riposo, una sala personale, una cucina e i servizi igienici necessari. L'area esterna dedicata, separata, è progettata appositamente per le esigenze dei bambini più piccoli. Le aree verdi al primo piano rimangono come spazi di gioco all’aperto e offrono ai bambini ulteriore spazio per muoversi e crescere.

Architettura
Il piano terra, parzialmente interrato, è stato realizzato in cemento. Al di sopra si erge il primo piano in legno, con pannelli in legno a strati incrociati, dotato di un tetto verde ecologicamente ed esteticamente pregevole. Grandi aperture finestrate sulle facciate esterne e verso il cortile interno garantiscono un’illuminazione naturale ottimale e creano un’atmosfera luminosa e invitante all’interno.
Le facciate si distinguono per un linguaggio formale chiaro e moderno e una scelta di materiali ridotta. L’involucro in legno del primo piano è tinto di un caldo rosso-bruno, ispirato al colore del campanile e del rivestimento della casa delle associazioni adiacente. Al piano terra, il rivestimento in granito si integra armoniosamente con l'ambiente, riprendendo il muro di pietra naturale della sala prove musicale vicina e il dislivello del terreno.
All'interno dell'edificio, il legno di betulla caratterizza gli spazi: dalle porte al rivestimento delle controsoffittature acustiche fino ai pavimenti in legno oliato e ai mobili in legno massiccio su misura. Questa scelta di materiali naturali, combinata con tonalità di colore tenui, crea un ambiente accogliente e a misura di bambino.

Sostenibilità e sicurezza
Oltre alla bellezza architettonica dell’edificio, è stata posta particolare attenzione alla sostenibilità e alla sicurezza. L’intero edificio è stato realizzato secondo lo standard CasaClima A. Il riscaldamento avviene tramite una pompa di calore aria-acqua autonoma. Inoltre, una ventilazione controllata con recupero di calore garantisce aria fresca e un ambiente climatizzato confortevole. Nel tetto verde sono integrati pannelli fotovoltaici.
L’edificio è stato finanziato attraverso il Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR), sostenuto da fondi dell’UE, e ha dovuto essere progettato secondo il principio DNSH (do no significant harm).
Un altro tema centrale del progetto è stato la protezione dal radon, un gas naturale che si trova in concentrazioni elevate nella regione. Per proteggere i bambini e il personale, sono state adottate misure costruttive a questo scopo. Una solida soletta in cemento armato, combinata con pannelli in vetro cellulare e una membrana impermeabile al radon, impedisce l’ingresso di radon nell’edificio. Queste misure sono state eseguite con grande cura per garantire il massimo livello di sicurezza.

Un’architettura d’impatto
Con la nuova scuola d’infanzia e asilo nido a Chienes, è stato creato un edificio che interagisce perfettamente con il suo ambiente e offre ai bambini un contesto creativo in cui possono muoversi liberamente, imparare insieme e crescere spensierati.
