Casa Perbellini 12 Apostoli | Patricia Urquiola
Verona / Italy / 2023
The new restaurant "I Dodici Apostoli", led by chef Perbellini in Verona, stands out from the traditional restaurant concept by offering guests a unique experience that immerses them in the chef's world. Through a carefully curated and welcoming environment, the restaurant conveys a homely atmosphere and invites guests to live the "Chef Experience."
Patricia Urquiola's project intervenes on a pre-existing architectural structure, preserving the spatial characteristics of the interiors while renewing them with warm terracotta and wood tones. The design choices were inspired by the historical premises of the "I Dodici Apostoli", whose walls and ceilings still bear the marks of its history.
At the entrance of the restaurant, guests are welcomed into an intimate and cozy lounge that creates a homely atmosphere. This space is designed as a quiet area where guests can sit while waiting for their table. The space is amplified by two pre-existing arches and a bookshelf. The ceiling bookshelf, a striking scenic element, occupies a central place in the lounge and also acts as a divider between the lounge and one of the restaurant’s dining rooms. One of the pre-existing arches has been transformed into a cloakroom, providing a dedicated space for guests to hang their coats and store their accessories.
The other arch leads directly to the second à la carte dining room and is fitted with fluted wood doors. This dining room features warm colors such as terracotta and natural materials like maple wood for some elements of the boiserie and the Antibes fabric for the sofa designed by Patricia Urquiola for Kartell.
The floor is adorned with a custom rug featuring a pattern designed by Patricia Urquiola (produced by CC- Tapis), which graphically echoes the geometries and tones of the existing frescoes in the restaurant. Through the central door of the bookshelf, guests can access the main à la carte dining room. In this space, as in the second à la carte dining room, the design is light, with precise and targeted interventions. With great respect for the architectural shell, Urquiola reinterprets the traditional atmosphere of the venue in a contemporary key, creating a bridge that connects the past and present. Both à la carte dining rooms aim to offer an engaging dining experience.
With warm, natural tones and contrasting highlighted details, the materials embrace and accentuate the existing architectural envelope. In these areas, Urquiola favors warm lighting, carefully selecting products to give guests the feeling of being in a home living room. The ceiling features a constellation of micro spotlights, reminiscent of the star-studded skies typical of Venetian frescoes. Continuing through the space, guests reach a vaulted room decorated with ceiling frescoes, where the restaurant’s wine cellar is located. At the center of the room stands a cube made of glass and rust-colored metal.
The final room hosts the Chef Dining Experience, the heart of "I Dodici Apostoli", where Urquiola's design perfectly aligns with chef Perbellini's vision and values. In this space, the kitchen is arranged in an L-shape, with five custom-made tables at the center that accommodate twelve guests. From this privileged position, beneath the large historic hood, guests enjoy an immersive experience that engages all the senses. The dining area is visually demarcated by the historic hood, which Urquiola reinterprets as a decorative and functional element, covering it with sound-absorbing panels and wall-washer lights that give the space a scenic character. Beneath the historic hood, directly under the Chef’s Table, the floor features a ceramic rug composed of tiles from the Tierras collection, designed by Patricia Urquiola for Mutina. These tiles have a warm, lived-in effect that gives the space uniqueness and character.
