LIMINAL JOURNEY

Departing from a reflection on the history of the St. Niklaus Chapel in Gstaad, its spiritual meaning and importance to the local community, artist Emilio Ferro has created a site-specific installation that offers to the viewer an immersive and meditative experience. Combining light and sound, his artwork is a metaphor for the journey of life: it symbolically addresses the theme of transformation and the fluid crossing of liminal spaces and times.

A beam of white light radiates from a totemic metal structure installed behind the altar and crosses the entire nave like an immaterial sculpture. When the chapel’s entrance door is opened, the light spills outward, extending into the village; when it is closed, the light is contained within, casting a luminous halo on the door itself. Underscoring the material presence of this physical threshold, the light creates a dynamic yet unsubstantial connection between the interior and the exterior of the building, between the chapel and the town.

Dedicated to St. Nicholas, the chapel has always played an important role for Gstaad and the valley, not only as a place of worship, but also as a symbol of the cultural identity of the region and its inhabitants. St. Nicholas, who is venerated as the patron saint of travelers, sailors and merchants, accompanies and protects those who are in transit, both physically and spiritually. He is a symbol of hope and offers guidance through the uncertainties and challenges of any journey.

As the beam of light traverses the chapel, it metaphorically unites past and present, the sacred and the ordinary. Ferro’s light sculpture underscores the universal dimension of the journey, which is not only to be understood as a geographical displacement, but also has an inner experience, as a path to consciousness, growth and transformation. The light radiating through the church’s nave becomes a metaphor for those who pass through it, symbolizing their physical and spiritual transitions. The light illuminates the path and creates an immaterial connection between generations, cultures and religions, between the community of yesterday and that of today. In the experience of light, visitors to the church discover a place of security and the opportunity to enter a meditative state and find a new and personal approach to prayer.

The installation is accompanied by a soundtrack created by Ferro. The water sounds of the rivers that flow in the Saanenland and around Gstaad are recorded via immersion microphones, sampled and transformed into a sound composition that accompanies the visitor and evokes the flow of time and life. In addition, the magnetic fields in the chapel are recorded to make audible what normally escapes the human ear. This sonic intervention by Ferro reveals what cannot be perceived by the ordinary senses, inviting the viewers to embark on another dimension of the journey: one of listening and inner reflection.

Dal 14 febbraio al 2 marzo 2025, la Cappella di San Nicola a Gstaad ospita Liminal Journey, un’installazione site-specific di luce e suono realizzata da Emilio Ferro. Partendo da una riflessione sulla storia della Cappella, sul suo significato spirituale e sulla sua importanza per la comunità locale, l’artista ha creato un'installazione che offre allo spettatore un’esperienza immersiva e meditativa.

Liminal Journey è una metafora del viaggio della vita, in cui passato e presente, sacro e ordinario si intrecciano, esplorando la trasformazione e l’attraversamento di spazi e tempi liminali.

Un fascio di luce bianca si irradia da una struttura metallica totemica installata dietro l’altare, attraversando l’intera navata come una scultura immateriale. Quando la porta d’ingresso della cappella si apre, la luce si diffonde all'esterno, estendendosi nel villaggio; quando è chiusa, la luce rimane contenuta all'interno, proiettando un alone luminoso sulla porta stessa. Sottolineando la presenza fisica di questa soglia materiale, la luce crea un collegamento dinamico ma impalpabile tra l’interno e l’esterno dell’edificio, tra la cappella e la città.

Dedicata a San Nicola, la cappella è simbolo dell’identità culturale della regione. Il santo, patrono dei viaggiatori, marinai e mercanti, accompagna e protegge coloro che sono in transito, sia fisicamente che spiritualmente. Simbolo di speranza, egli offre guida attraverso le incertezze e le sfide di ogni cammino.

Liminal Journey enfatizza la dimensione universale del viaggio, che non va inteso solo come uno spostamento geografico, ma anche come un percorso interiore verso la consapevolezza, la crescita e la trasformazione. La luce che si diffonde nella navata illumina il cammino e crea un legame immateriale tra generazioni, culture e religioni, tra la comunità di ieri e quella di oggi. Nell’esperienza della luce, i visitatori della chiesa scoprono un luogo di sicurezza e l’opportunità di entrare in uno stato meditativo, trovando un nuovo e personale approccio alla contemplazione.

L’installazione è accompagnata da una colonna sonora appositamente creata dall’artista, in cui i suoni dell’acqua dei fiumi del Saanenland e di Gstaad, registrati con microfoni a immersione, vengono campionati e trasformati in una composizione sonora che guida il visitatore ed evoca il flusso del tempo e della vita. Allo stesso tempo, i campi magnetici all’interno della cappella vengono catturati e resi udibili, rivelando ciò che normalmente sfugge all’orecchio umano. Questo intervento sonoro di Ferro svela l’invisibile e invita gli spettatori a un’esplorazione interiore fatta di ascolto e riflessione.
