Carmen | Cumulolimbo
Madrid / Spain / 2023
Carmen project restores the identity of a 1963 apartment in Madrid. With a deliberate and conscious approach to recycling and reuse, the space is stripped down, leaving only a few carefully selected design elements that organize and define the whole.
The concrete structure of pillars and beams is exposed, while the original tiled enclosures and dark period finishes are restored. Rather than replacing them, they are seamlessly integrated into an open-plan layout that revolves around two focal points: an island with a mustard-colored base topped with ceramic pieces and, on the opposite side, a striking orange wooden volume that anchors the living area.
This multifunctional orange structure serves as a partition, corridor, storage unit, countertop, shelving, and even a sofa—acting as a central mechanism that preserves the apartment’s original circulation between the main and service entrances.
The kitchen island is enveloped by natural light from the glass block wall, while behind it, a built-in unit camouflaged with the walls integrates the doors to private areas, the laundry room, and restrooms.
