CRASH | Hannes Peer Architecture

On the occasion of its debut at Milan Design Week, Margraf, an Italian leader in the marble industry, presents CRASH, an installation designed by Hannes Peer Architecture at Spazio BIG Santa Marta, located in the historic 5VIE district. This ambitious project represents the meeting point between the Milanese studio, led by architect Hannes Peer, known for its conceptual and multidisciplinary approach blending architecture, design, and theoretical research, and Margraf, a company with over a century of experience in marble processing through innovation and craftsmanship. The result is a work that pushes the boundaries between material and meaning.

CRASH redefines the perception of marble—traditionally seen as a symbol of stability and perfection—by presenting it as an instrument of rupture and revelation, far from its conventional decorative role. The installation explores collision as both a conceptual and physical force, reshaping objects and leaving visible traces of a profound interaction. The marble, bending and detaching from the wall, challenges its inherent stoic solidity, interrupting the architecture like a deliberate mistake. These "anomalies," though unnatural, appear organic, transforming the marble into an autonomous, living entity that breaks free from rigid historical expectations. It defies such constraints, bending and contorting to escape its traditional function, as if awakening from a long period of submission.

The project draws inspiration from the works of artists such as Michelangelo, Luciano Fabro, and Isamu Noguchi, who view fracture as an opportunity for reinvention and revelation. From Michelangelo’s unfinished works to Fabro’s challenge to the solidity of stone to express emotion, to Noguchi’s playful deconstruction of traditional sculpture, CRASH continues this legacy of creative disruption.

Starting at the entrance, the visitor is welcomed into a space reminiscent of a quarry, where marble twists into a cavernous formation before evolving through the space. It no longer accepts its fate as a "vertical slab," but instead slides down to the ground under the weight of its own mass or suddenly disrupts its natural logic. This culminates in the installation’s centrepiece, which lends its name to the project: a monumental marble slab defies its own nature, bending and crumbling in a frozen moment, as if the material were rewriting the laws of its existence. The tension between marble’s solidity and unpredictability invites the viewer to find beauty in imperfection and transformation. In CRASH, every mistake and unexpected event is not a flaw, but a vital part of the creative process, celebrating fragility and the richness of imperfection.

CRASH thus serves as a reflection on the dynamism and unpredictability of the creative process, where tradition and innovation collide, resulting in a work that transcends expectations. It invites us to see marble not as a static material, but as a living substance in constant evolution. In its fractures, dents, and accidents, the project underscores that creation is rarely linear, but arises from a series of collisions, impacts, and unforeseen outcomes. The result is a space where destruction and transformation converge, where every mark bears the memory of its creation, and where marble—a material that has endured for millennia—becomes a metaphor for the fleeting and fragile beauty of existence.

In occasione della sua prima Milano Design Week, Margraf, azienda italiana leader nel settore del marmo, presenta CRASH, un’installazione progettata da Hannes Peer Architecture all’interno di Spazio BIG Santa Marta, nello storico distretto delle 5VIE. Un progetto ambizioso che vede l’incontro tra lo studio milanese guidato dall’architetto Hannes Peer, conosciuto per il proprio approccio concettuale e multidisciplinare che fonde architettura, design e ricerca teorica, e Margraf, azienda con oltre un secolo di esperienza nella lavorazione del marmo attraverso innovazione e artigianalità. Il risultato è un’opera che sfida i confini tra materiale e significato.

CRASH trasforma la percezione del marmo, tradizionalmente simbolo di stabilità e perfezione, presentandolo come uno strumento di rottura e rivelazione, lontano dal suo tradizionale ruolo decorativo. L'installazione esplora la collisione come forza concettuale e fisica, che rimodella gli oggetti e lascia tracce visibili di un'interazione profonda. Il marmo, piegandosi e staccandosi dalla parete, sfida la propria natura di solidità stoica, interrompendo l'architettura come un errore voluto. Tali "anomalie", seppur innaturali, sembrano organiche, trasformando il marmo in un elemento autonomo e vivo che si libera dalle rigide aspettative storiche, che sfida tali imposizioni, piegandosi e contorcendosi per liberarsi dalla sua funzione tradizionale, come se si stesse risvegliando da un lungo stato di sottomissione.

Il progetto riflette sul lavoro di artisti come Michelangelo, Luciano Fabro e Isamu Noguchi, che considerano la frattura un’occasione di reinvenzione e di rivelazione. Dal non finito di Michelangelo, a Fabro che sfida la solidità della pietra per esprimere emozioni, fino ai giochi di Noguchi che abbattono le rigidità della scultura tradizionale, CRASH vuole continuare questa tradizione di rottura creativa.

Cominciando dall’ingresso, il visitatore è accolto in uno spazio che ricorda una cava, nel quale il marmo si contorce in una formazione cavernosa per poi evolversi nello spazio non accettando più il proprio destino di “lastra verticale”, ma scivolando a terra sotto la spinta del proprio peso o interrompendo improvvisamente la sua logica naturale fino ad arrivare al culmine dell’installazione, che dà il nome al progetto: una monumentale lastra di marmo sfida la sua stessa natura, piegandosi e sgretolandosi in un momento congelato, come se il materiale stesse riscrivendo le leggi della sua stessa esistenza. La tensione tra la solidità e l'imprevedibilità del marmo invita lo spettatore a vedere la bellezza nelle imperfezioni e nella trasformazione. In CRASH, ogni errore e imprevisto non è un difetto, ma un elemento fondamentale del processo creativo, che celebra la fragilità e la ricchezza dell’imperfezione. CRASH si presenta quindi come una riflessione sul dinamismo e sull’imprevedibilità del processo creativo, in cui tradizione e innovazione si scontrano, dando vita a un’opera che trascende le aspettative. Invita a guardare il marmo non più come un materiale statico, ma come una sostanza viva e in continua evoluzione. Nelle sue fratture, protuberanze e incidenti, il progetto sottolinea che la creazione è raramente lineare, ma nasce da una serie di collisioni, impatti e risultati imprevisti. Il risultato è uno spazio in cui la distruzione e la trasformazione si fondono, dove ogni segno porta con sé il ricordo della sua genesi, e dove il marmo — un materiale che ha resistito per millenni — diventa metafora della fugace e fragile bellezza dell’esistenza.
