DOUBLE HOUSE | Mieke Goris
for a family Antwerp / Belgium / 2022
The architect's project is a thoughtful and innovative approach to creating a harmonious living space for a newly blended family, designed to meet the unique needs of adult children and their parents. The project involves two separate houses on a single plot: one positioned at the front and the other at the back. This arrangement provides each family member with privacy while maintaining a strong sense of connection.
The renovation of the existing house was executed with a deep respect for its architectural heritage. The design honors the original structure, preserving its character and intricate details while skillfully integrating modern elements. The craftsmanship of the past is showcased through the careful restoration of features like ornate moldings, original wooden beams, and period-specific materials, creating a bridge between the old and the new.
A core aspect of the renovation was the incorporation of ecological technologies. The architect prioritized sustainability, introducing energy-efficient systems such as solar panels, rainwater harvesting, and a state-of-the-art insulation system that enhances the building's thermal performance. Natural materials were selected to ensure that the renovation had a minimal environmental impact, blending seamlessly with the existing structure.
The newly designed back house serves as a complementary counterpart to the front house. It is a contemporary space that contrasts yet harmonizes with the historic front house. The layout is open and fluid, fostering interaction among family members while also offering quiet retreats for moments of solitude.
This project is not just a renovation but a transformation. It breathes new life into the existing home while creating a unified living environment that respects the individuality of each family member. It stands as a testament to the possibility of merging the old with the new, tradition with innovation, and family with architecture in a way that is both functional and beautiful.
