On an undeveloped site between two closed buildings, we built a new terraced house for a young client. This new house has a simple and clear plan that leaves room to grow along with the client's needs.

On the ground floor, we find a spacious garage that will initially serve as a workshop. In time, this space could be converted into a living area or bedroom. At the back, in connection with the garden, we find a spacious bathroom.

People live on the first floor. On the street side we find a living space, in direct contact with the bedroom area on the second floor through a loft. At the back, we find the cooking area, with access to a terrace overlooking the garden.

The major challenge with this project lay in the available budget. This challenge became an internal case study for the office. Costs were saved by leaving as much of the load-bearing structures in sight as possible, following the principle ‘ structural work is finishing’. The vast majority of the precast bricks, the concrete slabs and the steel girders remain visible, as well as the wooden grating of the floors.

Both the front and rear façades have a playful character thanks to the use of upright and horizontal masonry bonding. Special attention was paid to the dimensions. The result is a symmetrical whole in which only complete bricks are used. The exterior joinery is provided in two colours, whereby the opening parts - with the exception of the front door - were given an olive green colour. The fixed parts were given a natural aluminium colour.

With this design, we succeeded in building an affordable new home that has enough flexibility to grow with its occupant, without sacrificing spaciousness and originality.
