The Barn

Mosfellsbaer / Iceland

Nestled amidst rolling lava fields just outside Reykjavík, The Barn is a singular conversion of a 19th-century hayloft into a ruggedly refined escape. Black-stained timber cladding and soaring A-frame trusses anchor the building in Iceland’s elemental landscape, while floor- to-ceiling glazing on both gable ends frames panoramic views of distant volcanoes and the golden circle countryside. Inside, the open-plan living area centers on a dramatic steel-clad fireplace hearth, flanked by built-in oak benches cushioned in wool and sheep-skin throws.
The kitchen is pared back and industrial-chic: raw concrete counters, matte-black cabinetry, and an oversized butcher-block island. A mezzanine gallery houses the master suite, its low-profile bed oriented toward the northern lights. On the ground floor, two guest bedrooms tuck beneath dramatic rooflines, each with en-suite wet rooms finished in honed stone and minimalist chrome fixtures. Outside, a heated cedar deck and soak pool invite contemplation under the midnight sun or sweeping auroras, making The Barn a study in contrast—harsh yet beautifully refined, austere yet deeply inviting.
