Patchwork | Atelier YokYok

Patchwork is a site-specific ephemeral installation by Atelier YokYok, curated by Line Up Urban Art for the event «Aux bords des paysages», organized by the municipalities of Grand Pic Saint Loup in Hérault, between June and October 2025.

In continuity with their work on thread and color, YokYok explores the transformation of reclaimed garment fabrics. Here, the worn “bleu de travail” — or surplus and end-of-stock pieces — evokes a craft-based and, above all, industrial activity that resonates with the working-class history of the eastern Paris suburbs, where YokYok is based.

PatchWork unfolds across the large wall in the square between the church and the castle.

The installation showcases reclaimed workwear.

This fragmented aggregation of a distinctive fabric reimagines a fictional collective physically tied to the world of labor, united by form and monochrome.

The installation dresses the façade like a costume, a tapestry, a curtain. Light and responsive to the wind, it evokes scenery as much as clothing and plumage.

Like a hanging drape or tapestry, the piece interacts with its setting. Suspended like a festive banner, it draws on the visual language of medieval celebrations—with their flags, fabrics, and vivid colors.

Through a slight detachment and an almost accidental tilt, the piece reveals its delicacy and fragility, contrasting with the imposing strength of the site. It plays with the relationship between architecture, material, and temporality.

Patchwork juxtaposes a contemporary, flexible material—tied to industrial times and labor— with a preserved medieval and Romanesque heritage site, dominated by stone.

Using reclaimed fabric—sometimes worn, or from surplus and end-of-stock—the work speaks of a contemporary era that is both vibrant and overproductive. It resonates with a mineral and inert cultural legacy that once embodied collective effort and craftsmanship, now expressed through centuries-old structures.

YokYok draws inspiration from textile art, the practice of patchwork, and fiber art to create textures and generate surfaces using simple, low-tech techniques. Their sources of inspiration range from modern and Bauhaus artists like Annie Albers to more contemporary figures such as Magdalena Abakanowicz or Olga de Amaral, as well as more spatial works like those of Ernesto Neto or Chiharu Shiota. YokYok is as interested in materials as in the power of color to engage in a dialogue with the spaces of their in situ installations.

Erected like a screen, the installation becomes a backdrop for self-staging in front of abstraction. Its curved form envelops visitors, enhancing the immersive experience. The tilt breaks the flatness of the plane, and gravity gives volume to the surface. The fabric pieces space out, casting shadows and creating motion.

Patchwork est une installation éphémère in situ proposée par l’atelier YokYok et curatée par Line Up urban art pour la manifestation « Aux bords des paysages » organisée par les communes du Grand Pic Saint Loup dans l’Hérault entre juin et octobre 2025.

Dans la continuité de son travail sur le fil et la couleur, YokYok explore la transformation de tissus de vêtements récupérés. Ici le «bleu de travail» usé ou issu de surproductions ou de fin de stocks évoque une activité artisanale et surtout industrielle qui résonne avec le passé ouvrier des villes de l’Est Parisien, où YokYok travaille.

PatchWork se déploie sur le grand mur de la place entre l’église et le château.

L’installation met en scène des «bleus de travail» récupérés. L’agrégation morcelée de ce tissu spécifique reconstitue un collectif imaginaire lié physiquement au monde du travail, uni par la forme et le monochrome.

L’installation habille la façade comme un costume, une tapisserie, un rideau. Légère et réactive au vent, elle évoque le décor, autant que l’habit et le plumage.

Comme une tenture ou une tapisserie, l’installation dialogue avec le site. A la manière d’une étoffe, suspendue, apanage de l’évènement, elle invoque le registre plastique de la mise en scène festive médiévale, avec ses fanions, ses tissus et ses couleurs.

Par un effet de décollement et d’inclinaison presque accidentelle, elle montre sa finesse et sa fragilité contrastant avec la force imposante des lieux, et joue avec les liens entre architecture, matière et temporalité.

Patchwork met en opposition un matériau contemporain, souple, lié à l’époque industrielle et fortement connoté au travail avec un site préservé au patrimoine médiéval et roman, marqué par une omniprésence de la pierre.

Par l’usage d’un matériau de ré-emploi, parfois usé ou parfois issu de surproductions ou de fin de stocks, l’œuvre parle d’une époque contemporaine, à la fois vivante et surproductive qui résonne avec un héritage culturel inerte et minéral, lui-même témoin d’une époque jadis riche et capable de chantiers collectifs pour des constructions aujourd’hui centenaires.

YokYok s’inspire de l’art textile, de la pratique du patchwork et du fiber art pour élaborer des textures et générer des surfaces avec des techniques simples et low-tech. Ses sources d’inspiration vont des artistes modernes et Bauhaus comme Annie Albers à des plus contemporain.e.s comme Magdalena

Abakanovicz ou Olga de Amaral en passant par des œuvres plus spatiales comme Ernesto Neto ou Chiharu Shiota. YokYok s’intéresse autant à la matière qu’a la force de la couleur pour dialoguer avec les lieux de ses installations in situ.
