EDD Educational Campus Expansion
The EDD Educational Campus Expansion is a community-focused educational architecture project in Kigali, Rwanda, designed to enhance learning, social interaction, and student well-being through innovative rooftop interventions. Developed for EDD (Empower, Develop and Dignify), a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable children and youth, the project introduces new educational and social spaces above the existing school buildings.
Founded in 2002, EDD has worked to transform the lives of vulnerable and formerly homeless children by providing education, life skills, psychological support, and pathways toward social reintegration. The architectural expansion reflects these values by creating environments that encourage learning, collaboration, creativity, and community engagement.
Rather than expanding horizontally, the project utilizes the roofs of existing school buildings to create new multifunctional spaces while preserving the existing campus footprint. The proposal introduces two distinct yet complementary architectural interventions: an open-air learning amphitheater and a contemporary rooftop café pavilion.
Educational Architecture for Community Development
The project explores how educational architecture can support both formal and informal learning. By transforming underutilized rooftop areas into active educational environments, the design expands the school's capacity while creating memorable spaces that encourage interaction and participation.
The new structures establish additional learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom, reinforcing EDD's mission of empowerment through education and social development.
Rooftop Amphitheater and Open-Air Learning Space
The first intervention introduces a multi-level rooftop structure designed as an open-air cinema, amphitheater, and collaborative learning environment.
Stepped seating follows the geometry of the roof, creating a flexible gathering space that can accommodate educational presentations, film screenings, workshops, performances, and community events. The amphitheater encourages collective participation while providing a unique outdoor classroom experience.
Beneath the seating structure, an additional multipurpose platform creates opportunities for group work, student activities, mentorship programs, and social interaction. Together, these spaces form a dedicated educational hub that expands the learning environment beyond conventional classrooms.
The open-air design maximizes natural ventilation and daylight while creating a comfortable setting for educational and cultural activities throughout the year.
Rooftop Café Pavilion
The second intervention introduces a contemporary rooftop café and social pavilion designed for students, teachers, staff, and visitors.
Inspired by the roof geometry of the existing campus buildings, the pavilion reinterprets familiar forms through folded and rotated roof planes that create a dynamic architectural composition. The resulting structure establishes a visual dialogue between the new addition and the existing school environment.
The pavilion combines covered seating areas with open-air terraces, creating flexible spaces for relaxation, informal meetings, social interaction, and student gatherings. Natural ventilation, panoramic views, and shaded outdoor areas contribute to a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere.
Beyond its function as a café, the pavilion serves as a social catalyst that strengthens community life within the educational campus.
Architectural Integration
A key objective of the project is maintaining continuity between the new additions and the existing school buildings.
The architectural language references the forms and proportions of the existing campus while introducing a contemporary identity that reflects the institution's future-oriented vision. The rooftop interventions appear as lightweight structures resting above the school buildings, creating a clear distinction between existing and new construction while maintaining visual harmony.
The design demonstrates how adaptive educational architecture can enhance existing facilities without disrupting daily school operations.
Materiality and Structural Strategy
Both structures utilize lightweight steel framing systems to minimize additional loads on the existing buildings and simplify construction.
Large glazed surfaces provide transparency and natural light while strengthening visual connections between interior and exterior spaces. Exposed structural elements contribute to the architectural character of the project and express the lightweight nature of the rooftop additions.
The material palette combines steel, glass, and warm-toned finishes, creating an energetic and youthful identity that reflects the spirit of the EDD community.
Sustainability Strategy
The project incorporates passive environmental principles suitable for Kigali's climate.
Open-air learning spaces maximize natural ventilation and reduce dependence on mechanical systems. Shaded gathering areas improve thermal comfort while maintaining strong connections with the outdoor environment.
By utilizing existing building rooftops, the project also minimizes land consumption and demonstrates an efficient approach to educational campus expansion.
Educational and Social Impact
The EDD Educational Campus Expansion is designed to support learning, creativity, and social development beyond traditional educational settings.
The rooftop amphitheater creates a platform for collective learning and cultural exchange, while the café pavilion encourages informal interaction and community building. Together, these interventions strengthen the educational experience and provide students with spaces that support both academic growth and personal development.
More than an architectural addition, the project represents an investment in community, education, and opportunity for future generations in Rwanda.
