Under a big vault | Gosplan architects
Recco / Italy / 2022
This holiday apartment has a particularly distinctive history. It is situated within a large historic structure in Recco, which the seaside town’s residents still refer to as “the convent,” despite its post-war conversion into residential units following extensive damage from aerial bombings.
The apartment is defined by a spacious vaulted area in stone, occupying what was once the uppermost portion of the church nave. In contrast, the sea-facing rooms feature more conventional flat ceilings in brick and concrete, corresponding to the reconstructed front section of the former church.
The architectural intervention emphasizes this duality, marking the spaces once inadvertently exposed to the open sky with a deep blue hue.
