Rooted in the industrial heritage of the site—once home to the London Taxi Drivers’ Association—Canal draws from its canal-side setting to shape a richly atmospheric interior. The design juxtaposes raw architectural elements like exposed concrete, visible conduits, and structural columns with expressive, handcrafted finishes. The result is a quietly sophisticated space that feels both grounded and transportive. At the heart of the restaurant is a sculptural zinc-clad island bar topped in creamy live-edge stone. Acting as a social anchor, it’s both visually and functionally central, with materials that echo throughout the space. A wall of bespoke Sapele wood and hammered zinc wine shelving reflects natural light from the canal, creating a dialogue between interior and landscape.

A-nrd’s material sensitivity continues in the custom seating: chiselled Beechwood banquettes upholstered in rich brown fabric, and communal tables that introduce warmth and sociability beneath the raw ceiling grid. The open kitchen—framed by a glazed timber canopy—offers a soft but theatrical transparency, allowing diners to connect with the craft of the kitchen without distraction. Lighting plays a poetic role. Handmade washi-style pendants by Findere hover like sculptural forms above window-side tables, their crumpled texture catching light like fabric. Wall lights by Foscarini softly graze the concrete walls, while track lighting zones the space with precision.

The curated furniture palette maintains a restrained elegance alongside zinc-topped tables and timber pieces designed in collaboration with London maker Jason Posno. Every detail reflects A-nrd’s signature language: tactile, unembellished, and deeply considered. Sustainability and longevity are fundamental. Rather than overwrite the building’s industrial bones, A-nrd highlights them—celebrating rawness, allowing patina, and balancing the robust with the refined. Outside, the canal-facing terrace extends the experience, with black steel furniture and soft landscaping offering a seamless transition from interior to urban edge.
