El deportivo is located in Cumbayá, one of the Andean valleys that surround the city of Quito, an area of ​​current urban and commercial development in the capital. It is built at 2400 meters above sea level in determining equinoctial conditions such as the vertical sun and considerable climate changes between day and night.

Taking advantage of the green space of the lot and the immediate natural context, a set of palm trees of considerable height which determine the guidelines for the project, are the starting point for the proposal to test a design process based on constructive and programmatic parameters before formal speculations.

In 250m2 of construction, the minimum required program includes a non-permanent space for food service and sanitary batteries, the resulting architecture instead allows us to have the empty space to develop a countless number of activities. A free and spacious structure does not determine or limit the programs and can become anything depending on how its interior is inhabited.

The project consists of two black volumes facing and distanced, linked by a 3m high metal truss that allows the roof to reach 7.5 meters in height at its highest point and, like in a pyramid, the more it gains in height. the more the opposite faces are reconciled.

At 12 meters away, the dialogue between the extremes requires making a change in height on the roof to emphasize the distance in response to a descending natural slope that marks the entrance to the lot, an inclination that manages rainwater and points to the sky to project a greater height to the volume. The roof becomes a façade by curving and revealing the wood as if it were a tongue.

The metal truss along the volume is the structural element that supports the 15m long curved laminated wood beams, a light roof, the minimum possible matter to build the maximum number of cubic meters and unimaginable activities. Large spaces provide a vital feeling of openness, freedom of movement and action.

The project conceives the architecture from the activities that are going to be developed, that involves conceiving the space from the interior, not from the outside, not as a distanced object. For this reason, the pre-existing palm trees play an important role in the rhythm of the façade and as an element of the immediate landscape that filters the entry of afternoon sunlight.

The block lacks intermediate space because the void itself is the connector and intersection from an interior that embraces the exterior. An invitation to open to the experience of the outside and inhabit the light and air. This is an invitation to watch and experience architecture not from form or image. It is an intention to involve the body and its movement, as a starting point.

El deportivo, se ubica en Cumbayá, uno de los valles andinos que rodean la ciudad de Quito, una zona de actual desarrollo urbano y comercial de la capital. Se implanta a 2400 metros sobre el nivel mar en condiciones equinocciales determinantes como el sol vertical y considerables cambios de clima entre el día y la noche.

Aprovechando el espacio verde del lote y el contexto natural inmediato, un conjunto de palmeras de considerable altura que marcan la pauta al proyecto, son el punto de partida para que la propuesta ponga a prueba un proceso de diseño basado en parámetros constructivos y programáticos antes que en especulaciones formales. 

En 250m2 de construcción, el programa mínimo requerido contempla un espacio no permanente de servicio de alimentación y baterías sanitarias, la arquitectura resultante en cambio nos permite disponer del espacio vacío para desarrollar un sinnúmero de actividades. Una estructura libre y espaciosa, no determina ni limita los programas y pueden convertirse en cualquier cosa según se habite su interior.

El proyecto consiste en dos volúmenes negros enfrentados y distanciados, vinculados por una cercha metálica de 3m de alto que permite a la cubierta llegar a 7.5 metros de altura en su punto más alto y al igual que en una pirámide, cuanto más se gana en altura más se reconcilian las caras opuestas.

A 12 metros de distancia el diálogo entre los extremos requiere hacer un cambio de altura en la cubierta para enfatizar la distancia en respuesta a una ladera natural descendiente que marca el ingreso del lote, inclinación que gestiona el agua lluvia y apunta al cielo para proyectar una mayor altura al volumen. La cubierta se convierte en fachada al curvarse y dejar ver la madera como si de una lengua se tratara.

La cercha metálica a lo largo del volumen es el elemento estructural que sostiene las vigas curvas de madera laminada de 12m de longitud, una cubierta ligera, la mínima materia posible para construir la máxima cantidad de metros cúbicos y de actividades inimaginables.  Los espacios grandes proporcionan una sensación vital de apertura, libertad de movimiento y acción.

El proyecto concibe la arquitectura a partir de las actividades que se van a desarrollar, eso involucra concebir el espacio desde dentro, no desde el exterior, no como un objeto distanciado. Por esa razón las palmeras preexistentes tienen un rol importante en el ritmo de la fachada y como elemento del paisaje inmediato que tamiza el ingreso de luz del sol de la tarde. 

El bloque carece de espacio intermedio porque el propio vacío es el conector e intersección desde un interior que abraza el exterior. Una invitación para abrirse a la experiencia del afuera y habitar la luz y el aire. Esta es una invitación a mirar y vivir la arquitectura no desde la forma o la imagen. Es una intención de involucrar al cuerpo y el movimiento de éste, como punto de partida.
