Cement tiles and star vaults in dialogue between home and studio San Vito dei Normanni / Italy / 2025
The project consists of the transformation of a historic building in the center of San Vito dei Normanni into a private residence and design studio. The intervention preserves the cement tile floors and star-vaulted ceilings, restoring their original colors and integrating them with lime-based finishes in a palette that echoes the earthy tones of the local landscape.
The original layout of the rooms is maintained, yet their functions have been reorganized to combine workspaces with private areas. The interiors unfold as fluid, continuous spaces, permeated by natural light that guides the transition between domestic and professional dimensions. The wall surfaces reveal a restrained materiality, with neutral shades emerging from the uncovering of existing layers, evoking the chromatic evolution of the space over time. Subtle textures complete the whole, offering calm and visual continuity, while the flooring becomes a distinctive and defining feature of the project.
The furnishings introduce a contemporary, contrasting language: aluminum and glass elements with a minimalist expression alternate with pieces of modern design. Alongside these, a collection of personal objects leaves a subjective imprint on the spaces, enriching them with narrative layers and making the environment more intimate and recognizable. This deliberate tension with the existing architecture underscores the overlapping of temporal dimensions and reinforces the overall identity of the intervention.
A fireplace with a geometric, rigorous design—made unique by its material, imperfect texture—acts as a discreet yet significant focal point, capable of engaging with the memory of the place through a distinctly contemporary gesture.
