Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium | Populous

Designed by Populous, the global leader in sports and entertainment design, the 68,700-capacity Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium features a unique parametrically-designed LED Façade. The design of the bowl places a premium on acoustics and atmosphere to amplify the passion of Morocco’s fans, with stands placed as close to the pitch as possible, amplifying crowd energy into a sonic wall.

Under the direction of the National Agency for Public Facilities of Morocco, the stadium was designed in accordance with FIFA specifications to host matches up to the semi-finals of the 2030 FIFA World Cup. It incorporates state-of-the-art media and broadcast facilities, a 360° wind-shielding roof, and expanded VVIP, VIP and hospitality areas.

The stadium will host Morocco’s national team as they play at the pinnacle of world football, while inspiring the youth of Morocco across the Kingdom. It has been delivered in just 24 months of combined design and construction, with design teams across multiple Populous offices ensuring continuous coordination with all stakeholders and adaptability working with Moroccan construction processes led by contractor SGTM.

Stadium Façade

The façade of the stadium uses parametric design that draws inspiration both from the interlaced palm leaves lining Rabat’s great boulevards, and from Morocco’s great artisanal tradition, the ‘Point de Fez’ embroidery and traditional ornamentation.

Its golden, shimmering profile rises from the eucalyptus forest of the city’s green belt - the southern lungs of Rabat - representing Morocco’s spirit of innovation and technological strength as it opens toward the Atlantic.

Covering 100,000 m², the façade has been created through parametric design is composed of 19,200 champagne-coloured aluminium triangles, each with their own unique dimensions

At sunset, the stadium creates a spectacular light show as the façade glows with the help of 70 km of LED strips spiralling around the structure.

Stadium Bowl

The bowl is the beating heart of the Moulay Abdellah Stadium, designed to connect Moroccan supporters’ immense passion with the action on the pitch.

A vast open concourse to the south leads into a steep, two-tiered 23,000 capacity ‘Kop’ stand, one of the largest fan sections in Africa and Europe. The two superposed tiers, where the upper tier cantilevers eight metres above the lower tier, create a breathtaking impression of floating over the field, directly overlooking the goal.

This dual-tiered south Kop serves as a ‘loudspeaker’ for supporter passion, facing the pitch, the players, and the other stands.

The West Stand hosts VVIP, VIP, skyboxes, and lounges, centred on the Royal Box, while the East Stand offers a versatile mix of lounges and skyboxes over three tiers.

Skyboxes on Level 2 form a U-shaped ring around the pitch, offering optimised views both of the pitch and of the vibrant South KOP stand.

The overall design ensures an electric stadium atmosphere, enhancing the fan experience at every level.

Construction timeline

The first foundations of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium were laid in September 2023, leaving only 24 months for the design and construction of a 68,700-seat stadium.

This speed was made possible thanks to the adaptability and responsiveness of Populous as part of its integration into the Moroccan construction process, led by the construction company Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc.

The simultaneous coordination of design teams located across several Populous offices ensured the delivery of all the information required for the completion of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium within its 24-month Design / Build period.

Public Space

The forecourt of the Moulay Abdellah Stadium is a new public space for Rabat, linked by a new railway station encouraging public transport to the stadium, and infrastructure connecting it to Hay Riad (east) and Akkari (west).

Factsheet

·      The original stadium was built in 1983 for the Mediterranean Games and has now been fully redeveloped (2023–2025) for AFCON 2025.

·      As Morocco’s flagship sports venue, it will enable the country to host major international events that in turn drive economic and social development.

·      It will host the opening match, semi-finals, and final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025, starting 21 December 2025.

·      Morocco will also host the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the next four years, starting October 2025.

·      Morocco—together with Spain and Portugal—will co-host the FIFA World Cup 2030.

·      Populous, in association with Oualalou + Choi, is also the architect of the Grand Stade Hassan II in Benslimane, which at 115,000 seats will be the largest football stadium in the world, with the ability to host the opening or final matches of the 2030 tournament.

Progettato da Populous, leader mondiale nel settore degli impianti sportivi e di intrattenimento, lo stadio ha una capienza di 68.700 posti e si distingue per una facciata a LED dal design parametrico unico. Il suo design è studiato per esaltare acustica e atmosfera, portando la passione dei tifosi direttamente sul campo: le tribune, posizionate il più vicino possibile all’area di gioco, convogliano l’energia della folla in un potente muro sonoro.

Realizzato sotto la direzione dell’Agenzia Nazionale per le Strutture Pubbliche del Marocco, lo stadio è conforme alle specifiche FIFA e potrà ospitare partite fino alle semifinali della Coppa del Mondo 2030. L’impianto è dotato di sistemi multimediali e di trasmissione all’avanguardia, di un tetto schermante a 360° per la protezione dal vento. Sono inoltre presenti ampi spazi VVIP, VIP e hospitality.

Lo stadio accoglierà la nazionale marocchina nelle competizioni più prestigiose del calcio mondiale, diventando anche fonte di ispirazione per i giovani in tutto il Regno. L’intero progetto, dalla progettazione alla costruzione, è stato portato a termine in soli 24 mesi grazie al lavoro dei team distribuiti nei diversi uffici di Populous, capaci di assicurare un coordinamento continuo con tutti gli stakeholder e di adattarsi ai processi costruttivi marocchini sotto la direzione dell’appaltatore SGTM.

La facciata

Il design della facciata dello stadio è ispirato alle palme intrecciate che si allineano lungo i grandi viali di Rabat, e all’importante tradizione artigianale del Marocco, con i ricami “Point de Fès” e le altre tipiche decorazioni locali. Il suo scintillante profilo dorato si innalza dalla foresta di eucalipti della cintura verde della città – i polmoni meridionali di Rabat – incarnando lo spirito di innovazione e la forza tecnologica del Marocco che si apre verso l’Atlantico. Realizzata su 100.000 mq con un design parametrico, la facciata si articola in 19.200 triangoli di alluminio color champagne, ciascuno unico nelle dimensioni. Al tramonto, lo stadio offre uno spettacolare gioco di luci, mentre la facciata si illumina grazie a 70 km di strisce LED che avvolgono la struttura a spirale.

Il Catino dello Stadio

Il catino, cuore pulsante del Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium, è progettato per connettere l’immensa passione dei tifosi marocchini con l’azione in campo. Un ampio corridoio aperto a sud conduce alla ripida tribuna “Kop” a due livelli che conta una capienza di 23.000 spettatori. Questa si configura come una delle aree tifosi più grandi d’Africa e d’Europa. I due livelli sovrapposti, con quello superiore che si protende di otto metri sull’inferiore, creano l’impressione di fluttuare sopra il campo, con una visuale diretta sulla porta.

Questa tribuna a due livelli – rivolta verso il campo, i giocatori e le altre tribune – funge da vero e proprio “altoparlante” per la passione dei tifosi. La tribuna ovest ospita VVIP, VIP, skybox e lounge, con al centro la Royal Box, mentre la tribuna est offre una combinazione versatile di lounge e skybox su tre livelli. Gli skybox, al secondo livello, formano un anello a U intorno al campo, offrendo una vista ottimizzata sia sul terreno di gioco che sulla vivace tribuna sud “Kop”. Questa configurazione porta un’energia travolgente nello stadio, ottimizzando l’esperienza dei tifosi in ogni settore.

Calendario/tempistiche dei lavori

La posa delle prime fondamenta dello stadio Prince Moulay Abdellah risale a settembre 2023, la progettazione e la realizzazione dello stadio da 68.700 posti sono state completate in soli 24 mesi. Tale rapidità è stata resa possibile dall’adattabilità e dalla prontezza di Populous, perfettamente integrata nel processo costruttivo marocchino guidato dalla Société Générale des Travaux du Maroc. Il coordinamento simultaneo dei diversi team di progettazione ha garantito un flusso costante di materiali e informazioni, consentendo di completare lo stadio Prince Moulay Abdellah entro i 24 mesi previsti per progettazione e costruzione.

Gli spazi pubblici

Il piazzale d’ingresso del Moulay Abdellah è un nuovo spazio pubblico per la città di Rabat, collegato con una moderna stazione ferroviaria che facilita l’accesso allo stadio e con altre infrastrutture che lo connettono ai quartieri di Hay Riad a est e ad Akkari a ovest.

Scheda informativa

·       Lo stadio originale è stato costruito nel 1983 per i Giochi del Mediterraneo ed è stato ora completamente riconcepito (2023–2025) in vista della Coppa d’Africa 2025.

·       In quanto impianto sportivo di punta del Marocco, permetterà al Paese di ospitare importanti eventi internazionali, favorendone lo sviluppo economico e sociale.

·       Accoglierà la partita inaugurale, le semifinali e la finale della Coppa d’Africa (AFCON) 2025, a partire dal 21 dicembre 2025.

·       Il Marocco ospiterà inoltre per i prossimi quattro anni la Coppa del Mondo FIFA Femminile Under 17, a partire da ottobre 2025.

·       Il Marocco, insieme a Spagna e Portogallo, co-ospiterà la Coppa del Mondo FIFA 2030.

·       Populous, in collaborazione con Oualalou + Choi, ha anche curato la progettazione del Grand Stade Hassan II a Benslimane, che con i suoi 115.000 posti sarà il più grande stadio di calcio al mondo e potrà ospitare le partite inaugurali o finali del torneo del 2030.
