Brutal Honesty | OF. Studio

Brutal Honesty is a project rooted in direct expression and raw authenticity. Earth-colored retaining walls rise from the terrain like abstract rock formations, defining three terraces and forming internal partitions that echo the contours of the land. These elements organise the interior spaces and reflect the way the house is inhabited, embracing a narrative shaped by its users.

Supporting a distinctive concrete plane — a grey plateau — the structure opens to 360-degree views of the Andean desert mountains and the oasis below. The house becomes a tectonic extension of the hillside, establishing a profound and sincere relationship with its environment.

Located in Pedemonte, Mendoza, Argentina, the site demands a negotiation between solar orientation and panoramic views. North provides optimal light in the Southern Hemisphere, while the South offers the most striking vistas. The house integrates seamlessly into the existing slope and native vegetation — not a single tree was removed during construction.

Programmatically, the house unfolds in three vertical stages of perception: inside the earth (basement), in-between the earth (ground floor), and outside the earth (first floor). At the heart lies the kitchen, wrapped by communal spaces and connected by three staircases offering alternative routes and spatial experiences.

Four terraces extend the house outward. The main terrace continues the living and dining areas into the landscape. Adjacent, the BBQ area supports large gatherings. A third terrace, linked to the playroom, provides a semi-independent space for children. Above all, the rooftop plateau offers zones for yoga, a fireplace, a jacuzzi, and gardens, framing the surroundings and inviting moments of stillness.

On the canyon-facing elevation, earth-toned concrete walls define the house’s massing and shield it from southern exposure. The structure seems to emerge from the hill, yet asserts a new identity — what the design team refers to as “OF. Abstract Nature.”

Exposed concrete, chosen for its resonance with local materials and crafted in close collaboration with regional builders, was fine-tuned through on-site testing to match the earth’s hues. This attention to materiality anchors the house in place, both visually and symbolically.

Sustainability is central to the design approach. Passive strategies — thermal insulation, shading, natural ventilation — reduce energy demand. Solar panels, solar heaters, and a greywater system further enhance the house’s environmental performance.

The clients envisioned a home that encourages connection while preserving privacy, maintaining visual dialogue between communal and intimate spaces. Their brief emphasised the importance of the views, the vegetation, and the idea of living with the land, not just on it.

In essence, Brutal Honesty is a built extension of the mountain — a space for living that neither conceals nor embellishes, but exists in open dialogue with its surroundings. It celebrates nature’s raw presence through architecture that is both sincere and grounded.

Honestidad Brutal

Brutal Honesty es un proyecto arraigado en la expresión directa y la autenticidad cruda. Muros de contención en tonos tierra emergen del terreno como formaciones rocosas abstractas, definiendo tres terrazas y configurando particiones interiores que siguen las curvas naturales del sitio. Estos elementos estructuran los espacios habitables y reflejan una narrativa moldeada por quienes habitan la casa.

Estos muros sostienen un plano de hormigón —una meseta gris— que se abre a vistas de 360 grados hacia las montañas desérticas andinas y el oasis en el valle. La vivienda se convierte en una extensión tectónica del cerro, estableciendo una relación profunda y sincera con su entorno.

Ubicada en Pedemonte, Mendoza, Argentina, el proyecto responde a una tensión entre orientación solar y vistas panorámicas: el norte garantiza la mejor luz en el hemisferio sur, mientras que el sur ofrece las vistas más impactantes. La casa se integra de forma orgánica a la pendiente y a la vegetación existente —sin talar un solo árbol.

Programáticamente, la vivienda se organiza en tres etapas verticales de percepción: dentro de la tierra (subsuelo), entre la tierra (planta baja) y fuera de la tierra (primer piso). En el corazón del proyecto se ubica la cocina, articulada por una escalera principal que conecta todos los niveles. Tres escaleras distintas permiten rutas alternativas, generando experiencias espaciales variadas.

Cuatro terrazas prolongan la casa hacia el paisaje. La principal continúa el estar-comedor hacia el exterior. A un lado, el área de parrilla facilita reuniones numerosas. Otra terraza, vinculada a la sala de juegos, ofrece independencia para los más chicos. Coronando la vivienda, la meseta en la azotea propone espacios abiertos para yoga, fogón, jacuzzi y huertas, diseñados para enmarcar el entorno e invitar a la contemplación.

En la fachada hacia el cañón, muros de hormigón pigmentado en tonos tierra definen la volumetría y protegen los interiores de la exposición sur. La estructura parece emerger del cerro, pero afirma una identidad propia: lo que el estudio denomina “OF. Naturaleza Abstracta.”

El hormigón visto fue elegido por su afinidad con la paleta material de la región y por su potencial expresivo al trabajar con mano de obra local. Se realizaron múltiples pruebas de color in situ hasta lograr una tonalidad que armoniza con el contexto y refuerza la conexión entre la casa y el paisaje.

La sostenibilidad fue eje rector del proyecto. Estrategias pasivas —aislamiento térmico, sombreamiento, ventilación natural— reducen la demanda energética. Paneles solares, termotanques solares y un sistema de reutilización de aguas grises contribuyen al desempeño ambiental de la vivienda.

Los clientes buscaban una casa que promoviera la interacción sin sacrificar la privacidad, manteniendo conexiones visuales entre lo público y lo íntimo. Su visión fue clave para lograr una obra que dialoga con el terreno y la vegetación, priorizando la continuidad sobre el contraste.

En esencia, Brutal Honesty es una extensión construida del paisaje —un espacio para habitar que no oculta ni decora, sino que existe en diálogo abierto con su entorno. Una arquitectura que celebra la presencia cruda de la naturaleza con sinceridad, oficio y respeto.
