North of Brooklyn

The 8th location of North of Brooklyn finds its home in Toronto’s Etobicoke neighborhood, occupying a two-story space that seamlessly marries vibrant takeout energy with a refined bar experience. The ground floor houses the North of Brooklyn kitchen and takeout counter, while the upper level transforms into the Low Rise bar and dining room.

Entering beneath a large lightbox awning emblazoned with the North of Brooklyn logo, visitors are immersed in a cinematic moment reminiscent of the Star Wars title crawl. This lightbox continues inside, forming the ceiling of the takeout area, which is fully enveloped in DTILE molded tiles. These custom tiles extend from wall to ceiling in a continuous wrap, even folding outward to create functional hooks for merch display, blurring the line between surface and fixture.

Upstairs, the Low Rise bar and dining room draw on nostalgic Italian design, reimagined with a contemporary edge. The 40-seat space is anchored by a monumental bar, clad in a mosaic of tumbled marble and topped with a zinc countertop that will become richly patinated with time.

Above, a fluted pendant light by In Common With casts a warm glow, setting the tone for an intimate dining experience.

To maximize natural light, new windows were cut into the side façade, aligning with walnut dining tables that cantilever from the walls, nestled perfectly within the window niches. These tables, paired with green leather banquettes inspired by Joe Colombo’s iconic Tube Chair, rest on folded steel feet, creating a subtle interplay of color, material, and form.

To address the low ceiling heights, the mechanical systems are concentrated around the perimeter, allowing for a raised ceiling in the center. This rounded rectangle is accented by a cove light that highlights the texture of the popcorn ceiling, creating a striking contrast against the high-gloss painted lower bulkhead, further enhancing the room’s spatial dynamics.

Le 8e succursale de North of Brooklyn se situe dans le quartier d'Etobicoke à Toronto, occupant un espace à deux étages qui marie harmonieusement dynamisme d’un comptoir de pizza pour emporter avec l'élégance d'un resto-bar raffiné. Le rez-de-chaussée abrite la cuisine et le comptoir à emporter de North of Brooklyn, tandis que l'étage supérieur se transforme en bar et salle à manger Low Rise.

En passant sous un grand auvent lumineux arborant le logo de North of Brooklyn, les visiteurs sont plongés dans un moment cinématographique rappelant l'ouverture légendaire de Star Wars. Ce caisson lumineux se prolonge à l'intérieur, formant le plafond de l'espace « take-out », entièrement enveloppé de carreaux de céramique moulés DTILE. Ces carreaux sur mesure s'étendent du mur au plafond dans un enroulement continu, se dépliant pour créer des crochets fonctionnels pour l'affichage de marchandises.

À l'étage, le bar et la salle à manger Low Rise s'inspirent des éléments de design nostalgique Italien, réinterprétés avec une touche contemporaine. L'espace de 40 places est ancré par un bar monumental, recouvert d'une mosaïque de marbre patiné et surmonté d'un comptoir en zinc. Au-dessus, un luminaire en verre fluté signé In Common With diffuse une lumière chaude, créant une atmosphère intime et accueillante.

Pour maximiser la lumière naturelle, de nouvelles fenêtres ont été découpées dans la façade latérale, alignées avec des tables en noyer qui se prolongent en porte-à-faux depuis les ouvertures. Ces tables, associées à des banquettes en cuir vert inspirées des célèbres Tube Chairs de Joe Colombo, reposent sur des pieds en acier plié, créant un subtil jeu de couleurs, de matériaux et de formes.

Pour répondre aux défis posés par les plafonds bas, les systèmes mécaniques ont été concentrés autour du périmètre, permettant ainsi de rehausser le plafond au centre. Ce rectangle arrondi est accentué par un éclairage indirect qui met en valeur la texture du plafond popcorn, créant un contraste saisissant avec la peinture brillante des retombées de plafond plus basses.
