Spiritual Enclosure | Ruben Valdez

A non-religious ceremony space that exists in close dialogue with the surrounding landscape and sky of the South Baja California Desert.

The intimate circular enclosure sits semi-buried in the desert terrain, symbolising a relationship with the surrounding landscape. Bare earth underfoot and an open-air roof reinforce a transcendental connection to the earth and the cosmos.

The shape of the structure carefully frames the surrounding landscape, with a semi-circular aperture providing views out onto the mountains beyond, while the skies above are framed within the circular walls. The structure is oriented along an east-west axis, allowing the movement of the sun to reflect both the passage of time and the ever-changing light of the desert.

A single baffled entranceway offset by 45° from the interior axis gradually reveals the space upon entry and creates a sense of seclusion that adds to the ceremonial nature of the site. The interior of the enclosure is left largely unadorned, save for a polished obsidian mirror modelled after the traditional texcatl mirrors used for centuries in Mexican culture as objects of reflection and spiritual divination.

Un espacio ceremonial secular que mantiene un estrecho diálogo con el paisaje y el cielo del desierto de Baja California Sur.

El recinto circular se encuentra semi-enterrado en el terreno, simbolizando su integración con el paisaje circundante y, al mismo tiempo, presentándose como una intervención discreta en el desierto. El espacio está compuesto principalmente por un anillo de concreto, con un suelo sin ningún tipo de recubrimiento que deja expuesta la tierra natural y un techo a cielo abierto, reforzando así una conexión trascendental con la tierra y el cosmos.

La forma de la estructura enmarca cuidadosamente el paisaje circundante, con una apertura semicircular que ofrece vistas a las montañas en la distancia, mientras que los cielos quedan delimitados por el muro circular. La estructura está orientada a lo largo de un eje este-oeste, permitiendo que el movimiento del sol refleje tanto el paso del tiempo como los matices siempre cambiantes de la luz en el desierto.

Un único acceso, compuesto por dos rampas en chicana y desfasado 45° del eje interior, revela gradualmente el espacio al ingresar, generando una sensación de recogimiento y aislamiento que refuerza el carácter ceremonial del sitio. El interior del recinto permanece en gran parte despojado, salvo por un espejo de obsidiana pulida, inspirado en los espejos tezcatl tradicionales, utilizados durante siglos en las culturas prehispánicas como objetos de introspección y reflexión espiritual.
