Casa Patio | LOMA Architetti
Gatteo / Italy / 2024
Casa Patio is an experimental residence that addresses the theme of living in every aspect: functional, distributive and compositional.
The Patio typology, takes its cue from the past to address the present, the patio conceived as a “Roman Atrium,” glazed on all four sides, represents the fulcrum of the house, creating dynamism around it and closely relating those rooms that are compatible in functionality.
In fact, the intent of the house is to combine the spatial, dynamic and perspective qualities of an open-space with the organization and functionality of compartmentalized spaces suitable for carrying out a very specific activity.
For this reason, the living area is configured as a sequence of spaces juxtaposed geometrically to form a cross, relating, through the patio, the four rooms: living room, kitchen, dining room and study in a dynamic spatial continuum to be discovered; in the center, the tree element symbol of vitality and resilience, capable of changing shape and color according to the seasons, creates ever-different scenery.
In the four corners of the house, on the other hand, the sleeping area finds space; four blocks separated from each other give the rooms themselves complete autonomy, like small annexes.
The four hallways placed at the corners of the patio represent a fundamental junction to the circulation and use of the shared spaces; a filter for access to the sleeping area, lowered and narrow to denounce the intimacy hidden behind the large wenge wood doors.
An industrial concrete basement allows the entire dwelling to be lifted from the surrounding land, rigorously defining the space of the house as an exhibition pavilion “of living.”
The large projecting four-pitch roof results as If resting on the lowered body of the building giving the dwelling a strong sense of protection and intimacy; a horizontality apt to celebrate the surrounding plain by leading the gaze to a flat, undefined horizon. The resulting image refers to the concept of a traditional house, thanks in part to the use of salvaged roof tiles and lime plaster, in sharp contrast to the experimental nature of the plan, seeking in tradition, the warmth and familiarity of a domestic construction with a deep connection to the history and place of belonging.
