Apartment in a single-family house in Wieliczka

The first thing that catches the eye upon entering the house in Wieliczka is the large, two-story window in the living room, which offers a beautiful view of Kraków situated below. As the building is located on a rather steep slope, the various functions unfold on multiple levels, and it is this multi-level nature of the house that was both the greatest disadvantage and advantage at the same time. It is a disadvantage because the vertical communication between the different levels takes up a lot of space in the rather limited area, and an advantage because multi-level design always serves as an excuse for picturesque visual solutions.

Unfortunately, the reinforced concrete stairs built by the developer were quite massive and awkward, further disrupting the spatial layout on the lowest level of the house. Therefore, the first step in the design process was to deeply rethink the vertical communication. By changing the direction of the stairs between the living room and the entrance hall, it was possible to create enough space for a dining table. The original reinforced concrete staircase structure was concealed in a new enclosure, and the spaces created under the stairs were repurposed for storage. A circular opening in the stair enclosure, through which the wooden treads and the greenery of the wall in the background are visible, illuminates the dark hallway and adds lightness to the newly formed structure.

The kitchen cabinetry, along with the other interior furnishings, does not compete with the high space of the living room, which, despite its rather monumental proportions, maintains a human, cozy scale. The only element that breaks the volume of the living area is the hanging pot lamp above the kitchen island, discreetly delineating the different functional zones of the room. The large amount of western light enabled the rapid and lush growth of the plants placed in the pot.

The arrangement of a significant portion of the walls in the living room was merely suggested—homeowners took precedence by decorating the living room with their paintings, photos, and even an original mining telephone.

Both in the living area and in the bathroom located on the upper floor, a lot of plywood and oak veneer in various shades were used. The wooden elements work particularly well with the floor in the living room, covered with a uniform layer of gray micro-cement, adding a considerable amount of visual warmth to the entire interior.

La prima cosa che colpisce entrando nella casa a Wieliczka è l’enorme finestra a due piani nel soggiorno, dalla quale si gode una splendida vista sulla Cracovia sottostante. Poiché l’edificio si trova su un pendio piuttosto ripido, le diverse funzioni si sviluppano su più livelli, e proprio questa multi-livellatura è stata allo stesso tempo il principale svantaggio e pregio. Svantaggio perché la comunicazione verticale tra i diversi livelli occupa molto spazio in un ambiente già relativamente limitato; pregio perché la multi-livellatura offre sempre l’occasione per soluzioni visive pittoresche.

Purtroppo, le scale in cemento armato realizzate dal costruttore erano piuttosto massicce e di forma irregolare, e disorganizzavano ulteriormente la disposizione spaziale del livello inferiore della casa. Il primo passo progettuale è stato quindi ripensare a fondo la comunicazione verticale. Modificando la direzione delle scale tra il soggiorno e l’ingresso, è stato possibile ricavare abbastanza spazio per un tavolo da pranzo. La struttura originale in cemento armato è stata nascosta nella nuova costruzione, mentre gli spazi sottostanti le scale sono stati utilizzati come ripostigli. Un’apertura circolare nella struttura delle scale, attraverso la quale si intravedono i gradini in legno e il verde della parete sullo sfondo, illumina il corridoio buio e conferisce leggerezza al volume recentemente creato.

L’arredamento della cucina, così come gli altri elementi d’interni, non compete con l’altezza del soggiorno, che, nonostante proporzioni piuttosto monumentali, mantiene una scala umana e accogliente. L’unico elemento che rompe la volumetria della zona giorno è la lampada sospesa a forma di fioriera sopra l’isola della cucina, che delimita discretamente le diverse aree funzionali della stanza. L’abbondante luce occidentale ha permesso una rapida e rigogliosa crescita delle piante collocate nella fioriera.

L’organizzazione della maggior parte delle pareti del soggiorno è stata solo suggerita: il ruolo principale è infatti stato assunto dai proprietari, che hanno decorato il soggiorno con i loro quadri, fotografie e persino un originale telefono da miniera.

Sia nella zona giorno sia nel bagno al piano superiore è stato utilizzato molto compensato e impiallacciatura di quercia in diverse tonalità. Gli elementi in legno si integrano particolarmente bene con il pavimento del soggiorno, ricoperto da uno strato uniforme di microcemento grigio, conferendo all’intero interno calore visivo.
