A key feature of the project lies in its ability to achieve a radical transformation through minimal means. Instead of relying on structural interventions, the redesign focuses entirely on color as an architectural tool; a strategy that unifies the fragmented volumes of the existing hotel and gives the ensemble a new, coherent identity within the village fabric. This approach demonstrates how creative precision and restraint can generate a strong visual and emotional impact while maintaining a low environmental footprint. The use of differentiated color layers not only clarifies the building’s structure and orientation but also reinterprets tradition in a contemporary and memorable way.

The Hotel Drumlerhof has continuously evolved and expanded over the years through various stages of development. The design task was to visually unify the architecturally heterogeneous volumes and to create a coherent identity that represents the hotel in the town center of Sand in Taufers as both a traditional and contemporary establishment. The concept was to enhance the ensemble solely through the chromatic redesign of the façades, achieving an aesthetic and sustainable upgrade without any structural alterations. This challenge was met exclusively through a thoughtful new color scheme. The resulting effect is a rare exception in the hotel sector, where qualitative renewal is often associated with major construction work and high resource consumption. The design employs the same graphic pattern across the façades but with different color variations. These differentiated tones correspond to distinct thematic areas and remain clearly legible on the building’s exterior: extensions and annexes are painted green, the main façade features a green-and-white composition, and red is reserved for marking the entrance, doors, veranda, and signage system. A small intervention with significant memorability and recognizability. This deliberate color structure makes the entire building complex more legible for both passers-by and guests. A new “attire” has been given to the ensemble, which, together with the improvement of the outdoor areas, enhances the overall quality of the hotel experience. The redesign emphasizes the hotel’s historical rootedness within the village. The conscious decision to adopt a low-resource design approach demonstrates how creative thinking can build upon existing structures and generate substantial added value.

Das Hotel Drumlerhof hat sich im Laufe der Jahre durch verschiedene Ausbaustufen stetig weiterentwickelt und vergrößert. Aufgabe des Entwurfes war es, die architektonisch heterogene Kubatur wieder visuell zusammenzuführen und eine einheitliche Identität zu schaffen, die das Hotel im Ortskern von Sand in Taufers als traditionelles und gleichzeitig zeitgemäßes Haus repräsentiert. Das Konzept war: Ausschließlich durch die farbliche Neugestaltung der Fassaden das Ensemble nicht nur ästhetisch, sondern auch ressourcenschonend aufzuwerten. Ohne bauliche Veränderungen wurde diese Aufgabe einzig durch eine neue, durchdachte Farbgebung gelöst. Der erzielte Effekt stellt eine seltene Ausnahme im Hotelbereich dar, wo qualitative Aufarbeitung oft mit erheblichen baulichen Eingriffen und Ressourceneinsatz einhergehen. Es wurde mit dem Selben graphischen Muster, aber unterschiedlichen Farbigkeiten gearbeitet. Die differenzierten Farbigkeiten konnotieren unterschiedliche Themen und werden so an der Fassade klar ablesbar. An- und Vorbauten sind grün gefärbt, die Hauptfassade grün-weiß – und die Farbe Rot bleibt zur Orientierung der Hervorhebung von Eingang, Türen, Veranda sowie dem Leitsystem vorbehalten. Ein kleiner Eingriff mit großem Erinnerungs- und Wiedererkennungswert. Diese gezielte Gliederung macht den Gebäudekomplex leichter verständlich, für Betrachter und Besucher. Eine neue Tracht wurde dem Ensemble angeeignet und verstärkt in Kombination mit der Aufwertung der Außenbereiche, die Qualität des Hotelbetriebs. Die Neugestaltung hebt die historische Verankerung des Hotels im Dorf hervor. Die bewusste Entscheidung für einen gestalterischen Ansatz mit geringem Ressourcenverbrauch demonstriert, wie durch kreative Lösungen ein mit dem Bestand weitergedacht wird und großer Mehrwert geschaffen werden kann.
