Distretto Solidale | Pier Currà Architettura

Architecture has the power to transform places not only from an aesthetic or functional point of view, but also socially and culturally. With the Distretto Solidale, Pier Currà Architettura has exemplified this ability, giving back to the city not only a building, but a civic stronghold, a generator of connections and a catalyst for trust. 

The project stems from a concrete need: to create a space for the collection, storage and free distribution of food to families in need. Thanks to a participatory process involving numerous local associations and the support of PNRR funds, the project immediately took on a value that transcends its functional scope, becoming an urban activator. The District is not just a “solidarity market”, but a place for meeting, listening and learning, an environment where assistance is intertwined with empowerment, generating dignity and opportunity. 

From an architectural point of view, the project consists of two volumes. The first, an existing renovated building, houses the Market on the ground floor and spaces for social and educational activities on the upper floor. The second is a newly designed warehouse of approximately 300 square metres. The two elements are connected by carefully designed internal flows, which ensure efficiency and symbolically evoke the gestures of giving and giving back, creating a continuous cycle between the city and its citizens, communities and individuals. 

The architectural identity of the project lies in its relationship with the surrounding natural context. The site, located within an urban park, required a measured and respectful approach. The studio chose to clad the new volume with reflective corrugated metal sheets, a skin that changes appearance depending on the light and the seasons, reflecting the colours and essences of the surrounding greenery. In this way, the built mass does not impose its presence but is visually absorbed by the landscape, becoming a silent architecture that vibrates and dialogues with its surroundings. It is a gesture that protects and reflects at the same time, like a collective mirror in which the community can recognise itself. 

This seemingly simple choice of material conceals a deeper meaning. Reflective aluminium is not only a technical solution but also a poetic device that transforms the building into a changing presence, capable of blending in with the park and re-establishing the role of architecture as a mediator between nature and artifice. Light becomes part of the design, and the open space, greenery and built form create a unified system in which the boundary between inside and outside is blurred.

Inside, the spaces are organised to ensure both functionality and hospitality. The ground floor houses food distribution activities: a service area for sorting goods, a multipurpose room and the market itself. Upstairs, the rooms are dedicated to training, social activities, guidance and meetings. This dual function reinforces the hybrid nature of the project: not only a place of support, but also of growth, participation and active citizenship.

The Solidarity District is part of a broader framework of inclusion and cohesion policies supported by the PNRR and the Municipality of Cesena. What sets this project apart, however, is its ability to translate public investment into a place of collective value, strengthening the social fabric and regenerating an urban space with architectural quality. The project does not simply respond to practical needs: it constructs a new imaginary, restores dignity to those who access it and affirms that architecture can be an instrument of equity and care.

At a time when many people are marginalised, the project designed by Pier Currà Architettura demonstrates that the quality of built space can become an instrument of dignity, connection and future. The Solidarity District is not just social architecture: it is a work that combines aesthetic measure, material innovation, urban sensitivity and human value. It is an example of how spaces, surfaces and nature can merge to give the city not just a building, but a place of community.

L’architettura ha il potere di trasformare i luoghi non solo dal punto di vista estetico o funzionale, ma anche sociale e culturale. Con il Distretto Solidale di Cesena, lo studio Pier Currà Architettura ha interpretato in maniera esemplare questa capacità, restituendo alla città non soltanto un edificio, ma un presidio civico, un motore di legami e un catalizzatore di fiducia. 

L’intervento nasce da un’esigenza concreta: creare uno spazio per la raccolta, lo stoccaggio e la distribuzione gratuita di beni alimentari destinati alle famiglie in difficoltà. Grazie a un processo partecipativo che ha coinvolto numerose associazioni del territorio e al sostegno dei fondi PNRR, il progetto ha assunto da subito una valenza che supera il perimetro funzionale per diventare un attivatore urbano. Il Distretto, infatti, non è soltanto un “market solidale”, ma un luogo di incontro, ascolto, formazione, un ambiente in cui la dimensione dell’assistenza si intreccia con quella dell’empowerment, generando dignità e opportunità.

Dal punto di vista architettonico, l’intervento si articola in due volumi. Il primo, frutto della rifunzionalizzazione di un edificio esistente, accoglie al piano terra gli spazi del Market e al piano superiore ambienti destinati ad attività sociali e formative. Il secondo è un corpo nuovo: un magazzino di circa 300 metri quadrati progettato ex novo. I due elementi dialogano attraverso flussi interni studiati con precisione, che garantiscono efficienza ma al tempo stesso rimandano simbolicamente al gesto del donare e del restituire, creando un ciclo continuo tra città e cittadini, tra comunità e individui.

La cifra architettonica dell’intervento trova la sua forza nel rapporto con il contesto naturale in cui è inserito. Il lotto, collocato all’interno di un parco urbano, ha richiesto un approccio misurato e rispettoso. Lo studio ha scelto di rivestire il nuovo volume con un involucro di lamiera metallica ondulata riflettente, una pelle capace di mutare aspetto a seconda della luce e delle stagioni, restituendo i colori e le essenze del verde circostante. In questo modo, la massa costruita non impone la propria presenza, ma si lascia attraversare visivamente dal paesaggio, diventando un’architettura silenziosa, che vibra e dialoga con l’intorno. È un gesto che protegge e al tempo stesso riflette, come uno specchio collettivo in cui la comunità può riconoscersi.

Questa scelta di superficie, apparentemente semplice, racchiude un significato profondo. L’alluminio riflettente non è solo un materiale tecnico, ma un dispositivo poetico che trasforma il volume in una presenza mutevole, capace di fondersi con il parco e di restituire all’architettura un ruolo di mediatore tra natura e artificio. La luce diventa parte integrante del progetto, e lo spazio aperto, il verde e il costruito formano un sistema unitario, in cui il confine tra interno ed esterno si assottiglia. 

All’interno, gli ambienti sono organizzati per offrire al tempo stesso funzionalità e accoglienza. Il piano terra ospita le attività legate alla distribuzione dei beni di prima necessità: uno spazio di servizio per lo smistamento delle merci, un’area polivalente, il market vero e proprio. Al livello superiore, le sale sono pensate per attività formative, sociali, di orientamento e di incontro. Questa duplicità funzionale rafforza la natura ibrida del progetto: non soltanto luogo di sostegno, ma anche di crescita, di partecipazione e di cittadinanza attiva. 

Il Distretto Solidale si inserisce in un quadro più ampio di politiche di inclusione e coesione sostenute dal PNRR e dal Comune di Cesena. Ma ciò che distingue questo intervento è la capacità di tradurre un investimento pubblico in un luogo di valore collettivo, capace di rafforzare il tessuto sociale e di rigenerare uno spazio urbano con un progetto architettonico di qualità. Il disegno non si limita a risolvere esigenze pratiche: costruisce un immaginario nuovo, restituisce dignità a chi vi accede e afferma che l’architettura può essere strumento di equità e cura. 

«Non volevamo creare solo un contenitore funzionale – spiega l’architetto Pier Currà – ma uno spazio capace di accogliere, ascoltare e restituire dignità. Il Distretto nasce come presidio di comunità, dove l’architettura diventa alleata silenziosa di un impegno collettivo verso un futuro più equo».

In un tempo in cui molti vivono la marginalità, il progetto firmato da Pier Currà Architettura dimostra che la qualità dello spazio costruito può diventare strumento di dignità, di connessione e di futuro. Il Distretto Solidale non è soltanto architettura sociale: è un’opera che tiene insieme misura estetica, innovazione materica, sensibilità urbana e valore umano. Un esempio di come spazi, superfici e natura possano fondersi per restituire alla città non un edificio, ma un luogo di comunità.
