Forest Hill House is a finely crafted reimagining of a tired Victorian semi in South London, transformed by Noto Architects into a calm, contemporary refuge for a chef and young family. Working within the tight constraints of Forest Hill’s historic streets, the project focuses on intelligent retrofit rather than expansion, reorganising the ground floor around a professional-grade kitchen that acts as the social and functional heart of the home. French + Tye’s photography captures the project’s essential qualities: soft daylight, warm natural materials, and long views that connect interior spaces to the leafy rear garden. Subtle interventions—careful massing, integrated storage, and a restrained palette—create a sense of order and spaciousness without disturbing the house’s Victorian character. The result is a serene, highly practical living environment that reflects broader shifts in London residential design: deeper engagement with existing fabric, hybrid spaces suited to work and family life, and an emphasis on creating moments of calm within the density of the city.
