Lalla’s house | Sonia Calzoni

The apartment is located on the mezzanine floor of a Lombard Art Nouveau building, an expression of skilled and cultured craftsmanship that embodies the artistic sensibilities of early 20th-century Milan. The renovation project for Lalla’s home is rooted in deep respect for this material, cultural, and family heritage.

The internal layout has been discreetly reconfigured with minimal structural interventions introduced to make the space more functional: a new entrance and a softly curved hallway lead toward the sleeping area, giving the rooms a renewed sense of openness.

The living room, dining room, and kitchen remain faithful to their original arrangement, yet they now open up to light, air, and new visual relationships that accommodate the rhythms of a more fluid, contemporary everyday life.

A decisive gesture marks the transition between past and present: a transparent metal screen designed specifically for this interior. This lightweight grille separates kitchen and dining room without ever truly dividing them into a subtle threshold that never reaches the ceiling, preserving the perception of spaciousness and unity. The deeper meaning of the project lies precisely in this invention.

The circular motif so characteristic of the original decorative elements reappears in the new opening carved between living and dining room, enhancing visual depth. The common thread continues in the palette: the pink and yellow enamel ceiling details found in the Art Nouveau stained-glass windows become a chromatic compass, guiding the selection of finishes throughout the home.

L’appartamento si trova al piano rialzato di un edificio liberty lombardo, espressione di un artigianato sapiente e colto che racconta nei dettagli il gusto artistico e la maestria del primo Novecento milanese. Il progetto di ristrutturazione della casa di Lalla nasce dall’ascolto e dal grande rispetto di questo patrimonio materiale, culturale e famigliare. La distribuzione interna viene rivisitata con discrezione e misura, operando minime modifiche murarie per rendere più funzionale la fruizione dello spazio: un nuovo ingresso e un disimpegno dalle linee curve e avvolgenti verso la zona notte, un respiro maggiore degli ambienti.

Il soggiorno, la sala da pranzo e la cucina restano fedeli alla loro conformazione originale, ma si aprono alla luce, alla leggerezza e a nuovi sguardi che assecondano i ritmi di una quotidianità più fluida e dinamica nei comportamenti. A segnare questo passaggio tra passato e presente è un innesto potente: una quinta trasparente in metallo disegnata ad hoc, un grigliato che separa la cucina e il pranzo senza mai realmente dividere. Una soglia sottile, un dispositivo che non raggiunge il soffitto in altezza e alleggerisce la percezione d’insieme, lasciando inalterata l’ampiezza e l’unitarietà dello spazio. In questa invenzione risiede il senso più profondo del progetto.

Il segno circolare, elemento ricorrente nei decori originali, riecheggia come cifra formale nella apertura ricavata nella parete tra il salotto e la sala da pranzo che regala altre profondità visive.

Il filo conduttore rimanda poi a quei rosa e gialli dipinti a smalto sui soffitti, presenti nelle vetrate liberty che hanno rappresentato ovunque la bussola cromatica nella scelta delle finiture.
