A green bridge
At the southern entrance to the South Tyrolean municipality of Barbian/Barbiano, Roland Baldi Architects have created a remarkable, multifunctional new building. The ensemble, comprising a kindergarten, daycare centre, children’s restaurant, tourist office, and public infrastructure, embodies the desire to rethink rural space in terms of both design and function.

The project is part of Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and was financed by the European Union as part of NextGenerationEU. The new building combines education, mobility, social interaction, and local development in a clearly defined architectural structure. The embodiment of a green landmark that meets the demands of the present and opens up new perspectives for rural areas.

Two buildings, one idea
The complex consists of two separate buildings located on opposite sides of the street: the kindergarten, nursery, cafeteria, and a protected play area are located on the hillside; opposite is the tourist office with public restrooms. Directly adjacent to this is a staircase and elevator tower that provides barrier-free access for visitors and villagers from the underground parking garage directly to the village centre. The entire building volume rests on an existing two-story underground parking garage. The steep slope necessitated a horizontal layering of functions – from technical rooms at the base of the complex to the educational areas and the roof, which serves as a safe outdoor play area for the children. A bridge spanning the street connects the two buildings and forms a functional and design-defining element.

Open spaces for new teaching methods
The architecture supports a teaching concept that focuses on movement, openness and self-directed learning. The classic class room typology has been replaced by permeable, thematically designed functional areas: creative and research zones, quiet rooms and role-play areas structure the building into learning and experience-oriented zones. The corridors repeatedly widen into small meeting islands that are used as lounge and play areas as well as retreat niches – a variety of spaces that enrich everyday teaching. On the first basement level, which is completely open to the valley side and has natural lighting, there are two group rooms and the children’s restaurant with kitchen, which also serves the neighbouring primary school. The ground floor houses another nursery group and the independently organised daycare centre with a group and quiet room, kitchenette, cloakroom, sanitary facilities and an indoor terrace. On the top floor, there is a multifunctional exercise room with direct access to the sheltered playground – exclusively for the children of the facility.

Tourist office, infrastructure and barrier-free connection
Across the street from the nursery, sits a new tourist office, a separate structure that houses not only the information office but also barrier-free toilet facilities for visitors. Directly in front: a newly designed bus station. Two speed bumps slow down traffic and ensure safety for all arrivals and the traffic and pedestrian zones are clearly structured.
Adjacent to the tourist office is the staircase and lift tower, which provides barrier-free access from the underground car park directly into the village centre. A bridge spans the road and leads to the kindergarten, first to the exercise room on the first floor, then to the ground floor.

Landscape as a design generator
A steep slope: a central design motif. Owing to its unique topography, the building is layered horizontally – from the technical rooms at the base of the structure to the educational levels and the play area on the roof. A robust exposed concrete foundation anchors the building to the slope, above which the structure has been developed in a light wood construction. The vertically structured, green-glazed timber façade makes the ensemble recognisable from afar – and gives it a distinctive appearance at the entrance to the village.

Sustainability and architecture
The building was constructed to the Climate House Gold standard. Heating is provided by a heat pump, supported by controlled ventilation with heat recovery. The interiors are characterised by light-coloured materials, consistent daylighting and use of wood: oiled floors, solid wood furniture and acoustically effective wooden ceilings create a calm, child-friendly atmosphere. Architecture and education are seamlessly intertwined.

A place for the future
With the project in Barbian/Barbiano, Roland Baldi Architects has succeeded in transforming a functional spatial programme into an architectural narrative. The combination of educational building, sustainable mobility and tourist infrastructure creates a place with impact – as a meeting place, a source of inspiration and a new landmark at the entrance to the village. A green bridge that nurtures the present, opens up new paths and helps shape change in rural areas.

Edificio multifunzionale a Barbiano. Scuola d’infanzia, asilo nido, ufficio turistico e collegamento al paese

COLLEGAMENTI VERDI
All’ingresso sud del comune di Barbiano, in Alto Adige, un nuovo edificio ridisegna l’accesso al paese. Il complesso multifunzionale ripensa lo spazio cittadino dal punto di vista estetico e funzionale; l’edificio, costruito in legno e di un vivace color verde, comprende una scuola dell’infanzia, un asilo nido, un ristorante per bambini, l’ufficio turistico e nuovi collegamenti pedonali.

Il progetto fa parte del Piano Nazionale di Ripresa e Resilienza (PNRR) ed è stato finanziato dall’Unione Europea nell’ambito di NextGenerationEU. La nuova costruzione riunisce educazione, mobilità e sviluppo del territorio in una struttura architettonicamente chiara e definita; un punto di riferimento che risponde alle esigenze del presente e apre nuove prospettive per il futuro.

Due edifici, un’unica idea
Il complesso si articola in due edifici indipendenti, situati su lati opposti della strada: sul lato a monte trovano posto la scuola dell’infanzia, l’asilo nido, il ristorante per bambini e un’area giochi protetta; di fronte si colloca l’ufficio turistico con i servizi igienici pubblici. A questo è collegata una torre con scala e ascensore, che garantisce ai visitatori e agli abitanti del paese un accesso senza barriere architettoniche dal parcheggio interrato al centro dell’abitato. L’intero complesso poggia su un’autorimessa sotterranea a due piani, realizzata in precedenza. La forte pendenza del terreno ha reso necessaria una stratificazione orizzontale delle funzioni, dai locali tecnici nel basamento, alle aree pedagogiche, fino alla copertura, concepita come spazio esterno sicuro per i bambini. Il ponte, che scavalca la strada e collega i due edifici, diventa l’elemento distintivo sia dal punto di vista funzionale che architettonico.

Spazi aperti per una nuova pedagogia
L’architettura sostiene un approccio educativo basato sul movimento, l’apertura e l’apprendimento autonomo. La tipologia classica dell’aula viene sostituita da aree funzionali flessibili e tematiche: zone creative e di ricerca, spazi riservati e aree per il gioco articolano l’edificio in ambienti orientati all’apprendimento e all’esperienza personale. I corridoi si ampliano in più punti, creando piccole isole d’incontro, usate come aree di sosta, luoghi di gioco o nicchie private: spazi intermedi che arricchiscono la quotidianità pedagogica. Al primo piano interrato, che verso valle emerge completamente dal terreno ed è illuminato dalla luce naturale, si trovano due aule di gruppo e il ristorante per bambini con cucina, che serve anche la vicina scuola primaria. Al piano terra sono collocati un ulteriore gruppo della scuola dell’infanzia e l’asilo nido, organizzato in modo autonomo con aula gioco e stanza per il riposo, angolo tè, guardaroba, servizi igienici e una terrazza interna. All’ultimo piano si apre una sala polifunzionale per il movimento con accesso diretto allo spazio giochi esterno, protetto e riservato esclusivamente ai bambini della struttura.

Ufficio turistico, infrastrutture e collegamento senza barriere
Sul lato opposto della strada, rispetto alla scuola dell’infanzia, è stato realizzato il nuovo ufficio turistico, un volume indipendente che, oltre allo sportello informazioni, ospita anche servizi igienici accessibili per i visitatori. Davanti si apre la nuova area di manovra degli autobus con fermata dedicata. Due dossi rallentano il traffico e garantiscono la sicurezza nella zona di arrivo; la viabilità e le aree pedonali sono chiaramente separate. All’ufficio turistico è collegata la torre con scale e ascensore, che assicura un collegamento verticale dal parcheggio interrato fino al centro del paese. Un ponte scavalca la strada e collega il paese alla scuola dell’infanzia: il primo ingresso avviene alla sala polifunzionale al primo piano, poi proseguendo fino al piano terra.

La topografia come generatore del progetto
La forte pendenza del terreno è stata il tema centrale della composizione: l’edificio è organizzato orizzontalmente: locali tecnici nel basamento, poi i livelli pedagogici, fino all’area giochi sul tetto. Un robusto basamento in cemento ancora l’edificio al pendio, da cui si eleva il volume architettonico realizzato interamente in legno. La facciata è rivestita in legno, con assi verticali e verniciati di verde; questo rende l’insieme riconoscibile già da lontano e gli conferisce una presenza autonoma volta a segnare l’ingresso al paese.

Sostenibilità e architettura
L’edificio è stato realizzato secondo lo standard CasaClima Gold. Il riscaldamento avviene tramite una pompa di calore, supportata da un impianto di ventilazione controllata. Gli ambienti interni si caratterizzano per materiali chiari, luce naturale e utilizzo del legno: pavimenti oliati, arredi in legno massiccio e soffitti in legno fonoassorbente creano un’atmosfera calma e particolarmente adatta ai bambini. Qui architettura e pedagogia si intrecciano in maniera tangibile.

Un luogo per il futuro
Con il progetto a Barbiano il programma funzionale è stato tradotto in un racconto architettonico. L’unione tra edificio educativo, mobilità sostenibile e infrastruttura turistica crea un luogo di incontro e un nuovo segno identitario del paese. Un landmark verde che prosegue la storia del luogo e apre a nuovi orizzonti, contribuendo a trasformare il paesaggio rurale in una realtà sempre dinamica e proiettata al futuro.
