Casa do Engenho | Silverline

During the development of this project, the clients, together with their children and grandchildren, were beginning a new stage in their lives. Throughout their professional careers, they have always been guided by care, preservation, and respect for what is passed down to future generations. They now sought to incorporate these same values into their living space, granting it continuity, vitality, and, above all, greater meaning.

After three months residing in the pool house due to an intervention in the main house, the clients recognized the potential of the space, which motivated the intervention in the current “Casa do Engenho.”

The close relationship between clients and architects, who have been long-time friends, allowed for a deep understanding of the family’s experiences and needs, also serving as inspiration for the project’s design. The client’s “attitude of courage” and the “indispensable on-site supervision allowed the project to reach this successful outcome” (Owner, 2025).

The intervention at Casa do Engenho reflects this desire to combine tradition and future, preserving the memory of the place while providing renewal, functionality, and comfort — principles that deserve our recognition and appreciation.

The Casa do Engenho is the result of an intervention on a building once intended to extend the life of the main house, hosting family celebrations and gatherings. Located within an agricultural estate in Vila Nova de Gaia — a territory of gentle slopes and maritime proximity — the construction forms part of a built complex dating back to the early 20th century, which also includes the main residence, cultivation areas, a threshing floor, wells, and several small ancillary buildings. 

The object of this intervention corresponds to a two-storey volume, situated at the center of the property. The proposal is based on a complete transformation of the interior, while preserving the structural integrity and architectural expression of the exterior, whose reading was clarified through the reorganization of the façade’s metric and the introduction of new shutters, ensuring comfort and flexibility in the management of natural light.

Before the intervention, the building presented a rigid, compartmentalized, and impersonal layout, composed of a garage, a hall, and a kitchen — all independent and disconnected, which limited spatial experience in both functionality and daylight. The rehabilitation thus emerged as an opportunity to rethink the interior organization, replacing fragmentation with an integrated and welcoming spatiality.

Although physically connected to the main house, this volume acquires its own identity, asserting a more contemporary and contrasting language. The interior was conceived to modernize and revitalize the spaces, maximizing visual permeability and the natural light, particularly from the west. 

The dwelling program is distributed across two floors, connected by a rehabilitated staircase that stands as a symbolic and sculptural element of the intervention. Its base is formed by stone steps, aligned with the flooring of the entrance hall, establishing a material continuity that anchors the space to its pre-existence. From this foundation, the staircase unfolds in wood, introducing lightness, warmth, and rhythm to the ascending path, leading from the most public areas of the house to its more private domains.

On the ground floor, the social areas are concentrated in a continuous space where the living room, dining room, and kitchen merge into a single environment. The fluidity between spaces is reinforced by material uniformity, particularly through the use of wood, which conveys unity and amplitude. The relationship between living and kitchen areas can be modulated by sliding wooden panels, allowing for different degrees of openness and privacy depending on the occasion. This floor also integrates a laundry, pantry, service bathroom, garage, and the main suite, which includes a walk-in closet, bathroom, and a spa area with direct access to the exterior.

The upper floor contains two suites and a spacious lounge, all with access to balconies. The pitched roof incorporates strategically positioned skylights, ensuring abundant natural light. It further extends beyond the perimeter of the house, creating a covered outdoor area that enhances open-air living while providing solar protection. 

Following the intervention, the building assumes a new role within the estate, no longer a complementary space but now affirmed as the family’s main residence. The rehabilitation restores vitality and meaning, safeguarding the memory of the place. The materiality draws on natural elements capable of dialoguing with the pre-existence, while the interior spatiality privileges continuity, fluidity, and the relationship between interior and exterior, ensuring the permanence of family life in a renewed, luminous, and welcoming home.

No desenvolvimento deste projeto, os clientes, juntamente com filhos e netos, encontravam-se a iniciar uma nova etapa da sua existência. Ao longo de toda a sua trajetória profissional, pautaram-se pelo cuidado na preservação e no respeito transmitido às gerações seguintes. Procuraram agora incorporar esses mesmos valores no seu espaço de habitação, conferindo-lhe continuidade e vitalidade e, acima de tudo, mais significado.

Após três meses a residir na casa da piscina, devido a uma intervenção na casa principal, a família reconhece o potencial do espaço, o que motivou a realização da intervenção na atual “Casa do Engenho”.

A proximidade entre clientes e arquitetos, amigos de longa data, permitiu compreender de forma profunda as vivências e necessidades da família, servindo também de inspiração para a conceção do projeto. A “atitude de coragem” por parte do cliente e “o acompanhamento de obra indispensável, permitiu que o projeto tivesse este desfecho” (Proprietário, 2025).

A intervenção na Casa do Engenho reflete este desejo de conjugar tradição e futuro, conservando a memória do lugar enquanto lhe proporciona renovação, funcionalidade e conforto - princípios que merecem aqui o nosso reconhecimento e agradecimento.

A Casa do Engenho é uma obra de intervenção num edifício outrora destinado a prolongar a vivência da casa principal, acolhendo celebrações e encontros familiares. Implantada no seio de uma propriedade agrícola em Vila Nova de Gaia - território de relevos suaves -, a construção integra um conjunto edificado do início do século XVIII, no qual se incluem a residência principal, áreas de cultivo, eira, poços, um deles “engenho” e outros pequenos edifícios de apoio.

A proposta assenta numa transformação integral do interior, preservando, todavia, a integridade estrutural e a expressão arquitetónica exterior, cuja leitura foi clarificada através da ordenação da métrica da fachada e da introdução de novas portadas assegurando conforto e flexibilidade na gestão da luminosidade interior.

Antes da intervenção, a casa da piscina apresentava uma organização rígida, compartimentada e impessoal, composta por uma garagem, um salão e uma cozinha, todos independentes e desarticulados, o que limitava a vivência dos espaços em termos funcionais. É precisamente na tentativa de combater estas barreiras que surge a oportunidade de repensar a organização interior para função e exigência habitacional. 

Embora em continuidade física com a casa principal, este corpo adquire identidade própria, afirmando-se com uma linguagem mais contemporânea e contrastante. O interior foi pensado para modernizar e revitalizar os espaços, explorando ao máximo a permeabilidade visual e a luz natural proveniente sobretudo de poente. 

O programa habitacional distribui-se em dois pisos já existentes, interligados através de uma escada contemporânea. A escada original foi reabilitada, assumindo-se como elemento simbólico e escultórico no desenho final. Constituída, na sua base, por degraus em pedra, coincidentes com o pavimento do hall de entrada, estabelecem uma continuidade material entre os espaços. A restante escada desenvolve-se numa sequência dos degraus em madeira, que introduzem leveza, calor e ritmo ao percurso ascendente, desde as zonas mais públicas da casa até às zonas mais íntima da habitação.

No piso térreo concentram-se as áreas sociais, organizadas num espaço contínuo, onde sala de estar, sala de jantar e cozinha constituem um só ambiente. A fluidez entre os espaços é reforçada pela uniformidade material, em particular pela presença da madeira, que confere unidade e amplitude. A relação entre sala e cozinha pode ser controlada por painéis deslizantes em madeira, permitindo controlar a abertura ou a privacidade consoante a ocasião. Ainda neste piso, o programa integra lavandaria, despensa, instalação sanitária de serviço, garagem e a suíte principal, composta por closet, instalação sanitária e área de spa com ligação direta ao exterior. 

O piso superior acolhe duas suítes e um salão amplo, todos com acesso a varandas. A cobertura inclinada integra claraboias estrategicamente posicionadas, que asseguram iluminação natural. Além disso, prolonga-se para além do perímetro da casa, formando uma área

exterior coberta que amplia as possibilidades de uso e permanência, ao mesmo tempo que assegura proteção solar.

Após a intervenção, o edifício adquire um novo protagonismo de toda a propriedade, deixando de ser um espaço complementar para se afirmar como a habitação principal da família. A requalificação devolve-lhe vitalidade e significado, salvaguardando a memória do lugar. A materialidade recorre a elementos naturais, capazes de dialogar com a pré-existência, enquanto a espacialidade interior privilegia a continuidade, a fluidez e a relação entre interior e exterior, garantindo a continuidade da vivência familiar num espaço renovado, luminoso e acolhedor.
