Mustard building | Aurora Arquitectos

The second chapter of the rose-house begins with the city code. The rules allow us to construct a new addition to the existent building on the back of the plot facing Princesa Street.  Being Vila Real de Santo Antonio city center heritage protected, we had strict rules to follow: (1) all new buildings are obliged to have exactly 12m height; (2) to have a clear distinction between old buildings and new additions, the design façade should not be similar to Pombalino style - rectangular french windows organized in an orthogonal grid. 

We took the challenge set by the regulations and we created a four-floor building divided in two to allow more light in the central patio. To improve the opportunities for social interaction and the common amenities of the residential complex, it was decided to use the last floor to locate a small swimming pool and a terrace for sunbathing.

For the facade, we designed a set of one pane sliding windows out of alignment. The dimension of the windows and the ability to disappear inside the walls can transform the living rooms almost into outdoor terraces making the most of the weather of this region.

For the interior, our option was to explore the opposite of the exotism of the existent building and design calm interiors similar in all the flats with wood and cream terrazzo. To this relaxing atmosphere, we added a bold element – an open partition of wood painted in a gradient of pink that organizes the social space of the flats and makes the chromatic connection with the beginning of this story: the rose building, that now is mustard-rose.

Edifício Mostarda - o interior sereno

O segundo capitulo do Edifício Rosa começa com o regulamento municipal. As regras estabelecidas nesse documento permitiam-nos construir um novo volume na parte de trás do lote alinhado pela Rua da Princesa. Sendo o centro de Vila Real de Santo António protegido patrimonialmente, existem regras estritas a seguir: (1) todas as novas edificações estão obrigadas a ter exactamente 12 m de altura; (2) de modo a conseguir-se uma distinção clara entre os edifícios existentes e as novas adições, o desenho de fachada não dever seguir as regras do estilo pombalino: janelas rectangulares de sacada organizadas numa grelha ortogonal.

Partimos do desafio criado pelos regulamentos e criámos um edifício de quatro pisos dividido em dois de modo a conseguir mais luz no pátio central. De forma a incrementar as oportunidades de interação social e enriquecer o programa do complexo residencial, foi decidido destinar o último piso para uma pequena piscina e um terraço para banhos de sol.

Para a fachada, optámos por um conjunto de janelas de correr de uma só folha desalinhadas entre si. A dimensão das janelas e a sua habilidade em desaparecerem dentro das paredes, permite transformar salas de estar em espaços abertos semi-exteriores que aproveitam ao máximo o bom tempo desta região. O exterior do edifício foi pintado de um mostrada suave de modo a complementar o rosa do edifício existente e vincar a personalidade distinta das duas metades do projecto.

No interior, a opção foi fazer o caminho oposto ao exotismo usado no edifício existente e desenhar um interior calmo com madeira e terrazo creme comum a todos os cinco novos apartamentos. A esta atmosfera tranquila adicionámos um elemento singular: uma divisória em prumos de madeira pintados em gradiente rosa que organiza os espaços sociais de cada apartamento e, ao mesmo tempo, faz a conexão cromática ao princípio desta história: o edifício rosa, que agora passou a ser rosa-mostarda.
