The renovation of this 1960s corner house in Bruges was a process in which both the existing architecture and the refined aesthetic sensitivity of the client, helped guide the direction of the design. The house, with its stately façade along the Brugse Coupure, remained largely untouched on the exterior, yet the interior required a complete rethinking. The original layout, a series of small, dark rooms, had lost its logic and its relationship to the garden.
By stripping the interior to its essence, creating new sightlines, and opening up the circulation, the house regained light and spatial clarity. The original neoclassical staircase in French stone and gilded detailing, a feature we consciously preserved, became an unexpected but defining reference for the materiality and atmosphere of the renewed spaces. Large floor-to-ceiling openings reconnect the living areas to the garden, while a redesigned sequence of kitchen, antechamber, dining room, and sitting room supports the natural rhythm of daily life.
The client, with her professional background in fashion, brought a distinct sense of tactility, color, and composition. Her preferences didn’t stand apart from the architectural concept; rather, they refined it. The result is an interior that feels both spatially clear and warm, both structured and personal.
What emerges is a home where structure, light, and texture reinforce one another, a house that regains openness and energy without losing its original character: layered, timeless, and carefully balanced.
