A light that encounters the Castello di Lombardia, rekindling its dialogue with the city and the horizon that surrounds it
Perched on the highest point of Enna, the Castello di Lombardia is one of the most important medieval fortresses in Sicily, a belvedere over the valley and the sky.
The redevelopment project by the Omphalos studio led by Andrea Caporali gives this symbolic place back to the city, transforming it into a system of public spaces connected to urban routes and to the landscape.
Light becomes the main instrument of this contemporary narrative: it guides access to the complex, highlights the bastions and the rocky escarpment without ever competing with the historic architecture, which remains the true protagonist. Sun pole-mounted projectors illuminate the walls and walkways with controlled light, while Medio in-ground fixtures create grazing illumination that enhances the materiality of the rock and reveals its nuances. The project also involves Piazza delle Rimembranze and the connection towards the Rocca di Cerere and the Museum of Myth: Mini recessed fixtures and Tris poles ensure safety and visual comfort in the resting areas, making them enjoyable even in the evening hours; Spy and Tikal step lights – the latter developed specifically for attachment to the corten railing – trace discreet lines of light, accompanying visitors along a new nocturnal landscape that is coherent, unified and evocative.
