HOBO HOTEL OSLO | Studio Aisslinger
Oslo / Norway / 2025
Centrally located in the heart of Oslo, just steps from Karl Johans Gate, HOBO Hotel Oslo brings a unique sense of freedom, openness, and ease to the city. The hotel is housed in three woven historic buildings, creating a tapestry of distinctive, character-rich spaces. Drawing from the same forward-thinking design philosophy as the original in Sweden, the Oslo edition adds a distinctly Norwegian spirit. studio aisslinger’s interior design for the new HOBO Hotel Oslo embodies an “Architecture of Optimism,” inspired by the collective idealism of the utopian communes of the 1960s. The result is a design language that is democratic, surprising, inclusive, and energetic architecture that looks forward, not back.
Creative functionalism lies at the heart of HOBO’s look and feel. In Oslo, studio aisslinger embraced a “city mining” approach—reusing and preserving elements of the original buildings wherever possible. Local and sustainable materials like Nordic natural stone, terrazzo, regional woods, and brick are combined with salvaged features such as timber beams, window frames, and historic brick walls. These are seamlessly integrated with HOBO’s bold new design language, creating a dialogue between old and new. A harmonious fusion of modern urban atmosphere and a deep appreciation for nature and craftsmanship is the result. Additionally, the spaces are conceived as open, loft-like environments that encourage interaction and accessibility, reflecting a casual, collage-like spirit.
Bespoke furniture pieces, developed in collaboration with renowned European design brands such as Cappellini, Moroso, and Dedon, reinforce HOBO’s distinct DNA: a blend of high-end craftsmanship, creativity, and playfulness. Complemented by local artworks, thrifted classics, and curated lighting, the interior feels both contemporary and personal — tactile, human, and welcoming. Altogether, studio aisslinger’s vision for HOBO Hotel Oslo translates collective idealism
into spatial form — a vibrant, optimistic environment where design becomes a living expression of community and modern urban life.
THE HOBO ROOM CONCEPTS
The HOBO Hotel Oslo features 181 rooms that range from a compact and cozy single room to a two-storey corner suite. The rooms are characterized by their unique layout: the bed positioned at the window invites guests to face the city, framed by a wooden staircase that doubles as a bedside table. Opposite, a large pegwall integrates a desk and playful storage solutions, encouraging flexibility and personalization. Equipped with vinyl players and karaoke machines, each space balances comfort, creativity, and individuality.
THE HOSPITALITY CONCEPTS
With HOBO Hotel Oslo, studio aisslinger is promoting local communities through design-driven decisions by creating dynamic spaces. The entire first floor is therefore designed as an event space where guests can connect, collaborate, and engage with their surroundings. Seating is flexible and unpretentious, designed to accommodate both individuals and groups in dynamic configurations that promote interaction. Guests and locals can choose between four different gastronomic offerings. The „Hobo Bar“ in the heart of the hotel under a glass roof, focuses on craftsmanship and sustainability, offering „kortreist“ (short-travelled, meaning local) wines. „Kreatur“ is a conceptual dining room that launches a new theme four times a year. „Yeast“ serves pizza al taglio alongside natural wines and homemade cocktails and the „Space By Café“ is a Hobo signature that offers a free pop-up space for local artists offering coffee by day and cocktails by night.
Together, these venues form the social heart of the hotel — a community hub for collaboration, creativity, and celebration.
SUSTAINABILITY AND COMMUNITY
True to HOBO’s commitment to sustainability, the Oslo branch integrates multiple planet-positive initiatives, including cleaning-on-request programs, food-waste reduction, vegetarian menus, and collaborations with local breweries and second-hand markets. The hotel actively supports the local creative community through pop-up events, artist residencies, and collaborative projects — even hosting community gatherings during construction to test design and concept ideas.
ALWAYS EVOLVING
True to its „always in beta mode“ philosophy, HOBO Hotel Oslo is not designed as a finished pro
duct, but as a living system that is constantly evolving. Even before the opening, pop-up events were held at the construction site to test concepts together with the community. With this innovative concept, studio aisslinger once again defined the design and created a new form of brand identity for HOBO in the Nordics. The result, a pioneering hospitality brand with hotels that are as alive and unpredictable as the cities they are born from.
With the interior design for HOBO Hotel Oslo, studio aisslinger sets a new milestone for experience-oriented hospitality design through immersive storytelling by creating a place that feels human-scale, textured, and hyper-local while seamlessly combining creativity, community, and sustainability.
“We wanted to blend the HOBO spirit with Oslo’s open-mindedness—creating a space where locals and travellers can connect over great food, music, creativity, and shared experiences.”
