Casa More | Workshop: Diseño y Construcción

Casa More, located in the historic district of Mérida, was built in the 1940s, influenced by the Art Deco style of the time. During the renovation process, the existing spaces were restored and remodeled, with the addition of a terrace and a swimming pool in the center of the property.

The first two wings are the oldest parts of the property, preserving their original mosaic tile floors and cedar doors. They currently house a foyer, the kitchen, a study, and the main bedroom. The floors these spaces stand out for the beauty of their xocbichuy (cross-stitch) floral designs. The third wing was added later, during the 1960s, and was renovated into house the main bathroom and service area. The same structure supports the new outdoor dining area, which is undoubtedly the heart of the project. Surrounded by tropical gardens, it connects to the kitchen via a large window on one side and to the central patio overlooking the new chukum pool. The pool incorporates the old cistern (used for rainwater collection), which was repurposed as an outdoor living space that appears to float on the water.

At the rear of the property is an 1980s structure, which was remodeled both in its volume (adding cantilevers and a stone wall that creates a private patio for the bathroom) and in its materials (using elements from the earlier bays to integrate and unify the different construction phases of the project).

Casa More offers the perfect environment to enjoy the warm Yucatecan climate, whether in its cool interiors, in a hammock under the trees or in the pool inside an old cistern.

Casa More ubicada en el centro histórico de la ciudad de Mérida, fue construida en los años 40´s influenciada por el estilo Art Decó de la época. Durante el proceso de intervención se restauraron y remodelaron los espacios existentes añadiendo únicamente una terraza y una alberca al centro del terreno. 

Las primeras dos crujías son las zonas más antiguas de la propiedad, mismas que conservaron sus tapetes de mosaicos de pasta y puertas de cedro originales. Actualmente albergan un recibidor, la cocina, un estudio y la recámara principal.  Lo pisos de estos últimos resaltan por la belleza de sus diseños florales tipo xocbichuy (punto de cruz).

La tercera crujía fue agregada posteriormente durante los años 60´s y se rehabilitó como el baño principal y el área de servicios donde la misma estructura sirve como soporte para el nuevo comedor exterior,  que es sin lugar a dudas el corazón del proyecto, ya que se encuentra  rodeado por jardines tropicales y conecta por un lado con la cocina por medio de un ventanal y por otro al patio central con vista a la nueva alberca de chukum, en donde se encuentra  el antiguo aljibe (usado para la recolección de aguas pluviales) mismo que se aprovechó como una sala exterior que da la impresión de flotar sobre el agua.

En la parte posterior del terreno se ubica una construcción de los años 80´s, la cual se remodeló tanto en su volumetría (agregando volados y un muro de piedra que crea un patio privado para el baño) como en su materialidad, (utilizando elementos que se encuentran en las primeras crujías como un medio de integrar y unificar las distintas etapas constructivas del proyecto).

Casa More ofrece el ambiente perfecto para el disfrute del cálido clima yucateco, ya sea en sus frescos interiores, en una hamaca bajo los árboles o en la alberca dentro de un antiguo aljibe.
