Reborn Barn | Pavol Mikolajcak
A Timeless Alpine Hideaway in the Dolomites Vigo di Fassa / Italy / 2025
The project is a renovation and transformation of a historic hay barn into an exclusive alpine hideaway set within a pristine, tranquil landscape in Val di Fassa. Situated on a 6,000 m² meadow at 1,450 meters above sea level, the house enjoys sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, offering complete privacy while maintaining an intimate connection with nature.
Originally a modest 1960s hay barn, the building has been fully reconstructed while preserving its original form, dimensions, and distinctive lateral openings. This approach made it possible to create a contemporary interpretation of the traditional alpine barn respecting its heritage while expressing a refined modern aesthetic.
The architectural concept aimed to maintain the external appearance and spatial essence of the existing structure, even as its function evolved. Traditional barns present a closed, monolithic exterior, where daylight filters through the narrow gaps between wooden planks an effect that inspired the project. Inside, barns are typically undivided, generous volumes, and maintaining this sense of openness became a central design principle.
The interior follows an open-plan layout that allows light and air to flow freely. Custom-made furniture, crafted by a local artisan, creates continuity between the living area, dining space, and kitchen. A modern fireplace serves as both a functional heat source and a sculptural focal point. The sleeping area occupies a mezzanine level that overlooks the living space, creating visual dialogue between the two. Panoramic windows frame sunrise and sunset over the mountains.
Sustainability is a fundamental aspect of the project. Geothermal energy provides efficient heating, while the use of untreated wood, local stone, and environmentally conscious finishes reinforces the relationship with the alpine setting.
Thanks to its secluded location and surrounding meadows, the house offers total privacy, a place to step away from daily pressures and reconnect with nature. At the same time, the design embodies a refined simplicity, avoiding ostentation in favor of calm, respectful architecture that honors the landscape and its materials.
The goal was to achieve a timeless atmosphere using only essential, authentic materials: genuine Dolomite stone and solid larch and fir. There are no dramatic gestures or showy features: only understated, thoughtful qualities. The guiding principle is “do not disturb,” allowing the surrounding landscape to remain the true protagonist.
