Bar Far - Villa Lontana

Bar Far is an art exhibition and site-specific installation created by Clementine Keith-Roach and Christopher Page and presented in Villa Lontana’s new space in Trastevere. Renovated in collaboration with Studio Strato, this new location extends Villa Lontana’s ongoing commitment to exploring the intersections between ancient and contemporary practices.

Curated by the Artistic Director of Villa Lontana Vittoria Bonifati, Bar Far echoes the name of Villa Lontana—‘Faraway Villa’—whose headquarters are located in the north of Rome and historically outside the city walls. With the opening of this site, situated deeper within the city, the former physical distance is transformed into a metaphysical one: the manifold illusions that comprise Bar Far conjure an ambiguous beyond. Keith-Roach, a sculptor, and Page, a painter, have animated the architecture of this newly renovated interior, creating a hallucinatory gesamtkunstwerk in the vein of ancient and baroque Rome.

Bar Far is both an artwork and a bar that draws inspiration from the art-bars of the past: Cabaret Voltaire, the Colony Room and Giorgio de Chirico’s favourite, Caffè Greco in Rome. Places like these often emerged during times of political upheaval and provided refuge for experiment and conversation. Like our dreams, Bar Far is a condensation of paradoxical layers. Echoes of ancient Roman and baroque lavishness mingle with contemporary architectural austerity, and flashes of colour that seem to come from the future.

The effect is an environment that is at once church and tomb, prophecy and ruin, heaven and hell. Keith-Roach’s plaster cast reliefs dramatise the building itself: body-parts emerge from walls and combine with construction materials—brick, pipe, timber—appearing not only to adorn but also to build Bar Far, like infrastructural Caryatids. Page’s wall painting turns the final room into an illusory colonnade or cloister— though one that surveys not a heavenly landscape but an ominous infinity that draws us in with an ambiguous, otherworldly glow. With Bar Far, the lines between the arts blur—sculpture blends with architecture while painting makes it disappear—and trompe l’oeil trickery confuses our sense of what is made of what.

Keith-Roach and Page have distinct practices as well as an ongoing collaboration, and their meeting point is illusion. Both utilise trompe l’oeil painting because they see in it subversive and perversely enlightening qualities: with painted effects we are not only deceived but are invited to look closer and witness the failure of the illusion. Keith-Roach's reliefs appear to be stoney extensions of the building, but upon closer inspection reveal themselves to be painted plaster, while Page's perspectival wall-painting is believably deep from some angles, but warps and distorts as we move around the room.

Bar Far is the latest manifestation of Keith-Roach and Page’s ongoing collaboration, a series of artworks and installations that manifest questions about the destruction of old worlds and the possibility of new ones emerging from the ruins. As world-orders that once held fast fall apart in front of our eyes, Bar Far offers a playful space to contemplate such questions, a space to talk and drink amidst paradoxes and contradictions, a metaphysical space in which, who knows, we might find answers at the bottom of a glass. 

Villa Lontana is a non-profit project space dedicated to exploring the intersections of ancient and contemporary practices in visual arts and sound. Initiated from the archaeological collection of the Santarelli Foundation, the project develops a layered archaeology encompassing exhibitions, publications, screenings, artist editions, and sound projects through its own label Villa Lontana Records, run in collaboration with Michele Ferrari. The project is run by Vittoria Bonifati and was founded in 2018 in collaboration with Jo Melvin.

Bar Far è un’installazione immersiva creata da Clementine Keith-Roach e Christopher Page, presentata nel nuovo spazio di Villa Lontana a Trastevere. La sede, ristrutturata in collaborazione con Studio Strato, si colloca all’interno della ricerca di Villa Lontana sulle intersezioni tra pratiche antiche e contemporanee.

Curata dalla Direttrice Artistica di Villa Lontana Vittoria Bonifati, la mostra Bar Far riecheggia il nome di Villa Lontana, storicamente collocata a Roma nord, fuori dalle mura della città. Con l’apertura del nuovo spazio, collocato più in profondità nel tessuto urbano, la lontananza fisica che caratterizzava il progetto si trasforma in una distanza metafisica: le molteplici illusioni che costituiscono Bar Far evocano un aldilà ambiguo. Keith-Roach, scultrice, e Page, pittore, hanno animato l’architettura di questo interno — appena ristrutturato in collaborazione con Studio Strato — creando un gesamtkunstwerk allucinatorio sulla scia della Roma antica e barocca. Bar Far è allo stesso tempo un’opera d’arte e un bar, che trae ispirazione dagli art-bar del passato: il Cabaret Voltaire, il Colony Room e il preferito di Giorgio de Chirico, il Caffè Greco a Roma.

Luoghi come questi spesso nacquero in periodi di sconvolgimenti politici e offrivano rifugio per la sperimentazione e la conversazione. Come i nostri sogni, Bar Far è una condensazione di strati paradossali. Echi dello sfarzo dell’antica Roma e del barocco si mescolano con l’austerità architettonica contemporanea, insieme a bagliori di colore che sembrano provenire dal futuro. Ne risulta un ambiente che è al tempo stesso chiesa e tomba, profezia e rovina, paradiso e inferno.

I bassorilievi in gesso di Keith-Roach accentuano l’edificio stesso: parti del corpo emergono dalle pareti e si combinano con materiali da costruzione — mattoni, tubi, legno — mostrandosi non solo come elementi ornamentali, ma anche come strutture che contribuiscono a costruire Bar Far, come Cariatidi infrastrutturali. Il wall painting di Page trasforma l’ultima stanza in un colonnato o in un chiostro illusorio — sebbene non rivolto verso un paesaggio celestiale, bensì verso un’infinità minacciosa che ci attira con un bagliore ambiguo e ultraterreno.

Con Bar Far, i confini tra le arti si confondono — la scultura si fonde con l’architettura mentre la pittura la fa scomparire — e i giochi di trompe l’oeil disorientano la nostra percezione di ciò che è fatto di cosa. Keith-Roach e Page hanno pratiche distinte ma anche una collaborazione in corso, e il loro punto d’incontro è l’illusione. Entrambi utilizzano la pittura trompe l’oeil perché vi riconoscono qualità sovversive e perversamente illuminanti: attraverso gli effetti dipinti non siamo solo ingannati, ma invitati a osservare più da vicino e a testimoniare il fallimento dell’illusione.

I rilievi di Keith-Roach sembrano estensioni lapidee dell’edificio, ma a un esame attento rivelano la loro natura in gesso dipinto, mentre il wall painting prospettico di Page risulta credibilmente infinito da alcuni angoli, ma si deforma e si distorce mentre ci muoviamo nello spazio. Bar Far è la più recente manifestazione della collaborazione tra Keith-Roach e Page, una serie di opere e installazioni che rendono visibili interrogativi sulla distruzione dei vecchi mondi e sulla possibilità che nuovi mondi possano emergere dalle rovine.

Mentre gli equilibri globali, che un tempo sembravano solidi, si sfaldano davanti ai nostri occhi, Bar Far offre uno spazio ludico in cui contemplare tali questioni, uno spazio in cui parlare e bere tra paradossi e contraddizioni, uno spazio metafisico nel quale, chissà, forse potremmo trovare risposte in fondo a un bicchiere.

Villa Lontana è uno spazio indipendente che esplora le intersezioni tra pratiche antiche e contemporanee, con particolare attenzione alle arti visive e alla ricerca sonora. Originato dalla collezione archeologica della Fondazione Santarelli, il progetto sviluppa un’archeologia stratificata che si articola in mostre, pubblicazioni, screening, edizioni d’artista e progetti sonori attraverso la propria etichetta, Villa Lontana Records, diretta in collaborazione con Michele Ferrari. Il progetto è a cura di Vittoria Bonifati ed è stato fondato nel 2018 in collaborazione con Jo Melvin.
