Mediterrasian | Paloma Bau Studio
Denia / Spain / 2025
Facing Las Marinas beach in Denia, Mediterrasian blends Mediterranean warmth with Asian serenity in just 55 square meters. This cultural synthesis is achieved through a precise strategy: three materials and three functions that articulate the space through balance, order, and matter.
Mediterrasian is a renovation and interior design project in a 55-square-meter apartment located on the ground floor of a residential complex facing Las Marinas beach in Denia. The intervention proposes a calm and essential interpretation of the domestic space, projected from the organization, materiality, and detail.
Without major changes to the layout, the project connects the kitchen and living room to open up the living area and reorganizes some fixed elements in the bathrooms, with the aim of making the most of the available space. The main focus, however, is on correcting the neglected aspects that are often found in conventional homes: ceilings with changes in height due to installations, unnecessary screeds, poorly integrated pillars, and poorly resolved material joints. Paloma Bau has sought to harmonize the fragmented and to visually and structurally organize every corner.
A home based on three concepts and three materials.
The project strategy is based on three concepts: balance, order, and matter. From this foundation, three materials are defined and applied to three functions: the structural elements organize the spaces, natural stone is linked to use, and wood shapes the furniture. This logic is clearly carried throughout the home.
The structural elements take on a life of their own in every corner: they emerge as a step that invites you out onto the terrace while serving as a generous base for the sofa, they rise in the form of an archway that intimately embraces the kitchen area, they transform into shelving that subtly delimits the storage area, and they flow in organic curves that protect the wet areas of the bathroom. In the master bedroom, a masonry headboard frames the bed with a serene presence.
The bush-hammered pearl brown stone, with its rough texture reminiscent of pebbles polished by the waves, finds its natural place in sinks, countertops, and tables, surfaces that invite touch and everyday use. Light oak brings warmth through shelving and cabinets, while microcement embraces the entire home like a second skin, unifying spaces and creating visual continuity, giving the space greater spatiality.
Mediterranean and Asian fusion through materiality.
The décor reinforces the coherence of the whole. Natural linens and cottons are used, combined with dark-colored rods and accessories that provide contrast. Ceramic pieces by Canoa Lab introduce craftsmanship that dialogues with the rest of the materials. The lighting, designed using rice paper and alabaster, adds a light and diffuse texture, reminiscent of both Mediterranean light and certain Asian aesthetic atmospheres.
Inspired by the coast of Denia, the sea, the sand, and the pebbles, Mediterrasian condenses an architectural interpretation of the Mediterranean landscape into 55 square meters. The name unites two cultures through space: the materiality and warmth of the Mediterranean are balanced with the serenity, precision, and sense of order associated with the Asian imagination. This fusion is made tangible in the materials, the neutrality of the palette, the formal restraint, and the dialogue between the artisanal and the structural.
