Villa Parque | h3o architects

The project is a comprehensive transformation of a 240 mÇ detached house from the late 19th century.

Through a precise and surgical intervention —one that preserves the building’s singular character— the house is given a new life that is more open, bright, and energy-efficient.

The project responds to the desire of a couple entering a new stage in life: to cultivate closeness with their family and re-establish themselves in the neighborhood where they grew up. From this renewed chapter, the home is conceived as a space capable of rekindling bonds and protecting them —a tranquil retreat within the urban fabric.

“Villa Parque has an imposing presence: it’s a spacious house with high ceilings and generous proportions. Yet at the same time, it conveys an intimate and enveloping warmth. Natural light, noble materials, and the constant connection with the garden make the house —despite its scale— feel welcoming, calm and gentle to those who inhabit it. The spatial sequence is organized into three main areas. On the upper floor —which has direct access from the street and sits elevated above the garden— the daytime and social life unfolds: kitchen, foyer, living room and dining room are integrated into a spacious, light-filled environment. The lower, semi-basement floor, designed for private and resting areas, offers a more intimate and sheltered atmosphere, with bedrooms that open directly to the outdoors.

Finally, the quiet, secluded rear garden is conceived as a natural extension of the adjacent urban park, toward which the house is fully oriented through new openings that enhance permeability and connection between the three realms. This relationship is further reinforced by an exterior staircase linking the upper floor directly to the garden from an expanded balcony that also functions as a lookout.

On a spatial and material level, the interior highlights the duality between the two realms of living. The social area is defined by its brightness and clarity: the traditional barrel-vaulted brick ceilings (volta catalana in Catalan) is left exposed and whitewashed, contrasting with dark wood furniture, black leather and the colorful patterns of the original hydraulic tiles —traces of the house’s past. At the same time, mirrors along the walls creates reflections and transparencies, enhancing the sense of connection with the surrounding greenery.

The private area, in contact with the ground, offers a more intimate and contemplative atmosphere, featuring wooden floors and soft finishes in tones ranging from beige to sea green.

The pre-existing staircase is reinterpreted through a vivid Klein blue treatment, elevating it from a merely functional element to a spatial experience —a chromatic gesture that anchors and articulates the interior.

Outdoors, the garden combines existing vegetation with low-irrigation Mediterranean species.

The boundary walls recover their original stone and are covered with a metal mesh for climbing plants that, over time, will create varying layers of shade and weave together architecture and nature into an immersive natural space. The studio has also preserved the façade’s traditional plaster finish, adding textured details such as ceramic drip edges from La Bisbal and the iconic shutters by Persiana Barcelona.

The zigzagging geometry —a distinctive hallmark of the studio— draws inspiration from the site’s natural topography and extends throughout the project: outdoors, it appears in the pathways, the fountain, and the oblique pillar of the balcony; indoors, it reemerges in the kitchen and shelving, ensuring continuity within the home’s architectural language.

Finally, energy efficiency has been a key focus of the renovation. The house is fully insulated, with interior cladding, a ventilated slab, and a thermally conditioned roof to minimize energy loss. In addition, it features an aerothermal climate-control system and collects rainwater from the roof for garden irrigation. A conscious architecture, centered on comfort and efficiency.

Villa Parque by h3o architects is a tribute to memory and the present; it carefully preserves the home’s original spirit while establishing a dialogue between the existing and the new, resulting in a house that —like its inhabitants— returns to its origins with a renewed perspective.

Se trata de una reforma integral de una casa unifamiliar de 240 m. a cuatro vientos de finales del siglo XIX que, a partir de una operaci.n quir.rgica de precisi.n, sin perder la singularidad, le otorga una nueva vida más permeable, luminosa y eficiente.

El proyecto responde al deseo de una pareja que inicia una nueva etapa vital de cultivar la cercanía con su familia y reestablecerse en el barrio en donde crecieron. Desde esta nueva etapa vital, la vivienda se plantea como un espacio capaz de reactivar los vínculos y protegerlos a través un refugio de tranquilidad dentro del entorno urbano.

“Villa Parque tiene una presencia imponente: es una casa amplia, con techos altos y proporciones generosas. Pero a la vez, transmite una calidez íntima y envolvente. La luz natural, los materiales nobles y la conexión constante con el jardín hacen que, a pesar de su escala, la casa se sienta acogedora, tranquila y amable con quien la habita.

El recorrido se articula en tres .mbitos principales. En la planta superior, con acceso directo desde la calle y elevada respecto al jardín, se desarrolla la vida diurna y social: cocina, recibidor, salón y comedor se integran en un ambiente amplio y luminoso. La planta inferior, semienterrada, ideada para las zonas privadas y de descanso, genera, en cambio, una atmósfera más íntima y protegida, con dormitorios que se abren directamente al exterior. Por último, el jard.n trasero, resguardado y silencioso, se concibe como una extensión natural del parque urbano adyacente al que la casa está plenamente orientada mediante nuevos vanos que favorecen la permeabilidad y la conexión entre los tres ámbitos. Esta conexión es reforzada por una escalera exterior que conecta la planta superior directamente con el jardín desde un balcón ampliado que funciona de mirador.

A nivel espacial y material, el interior resalta la dualidad entre las dos estancias del vivir: la zona social se caracteriza por su luminosidad y claridad. La volta catalana se deja a la vista, blanqueada, en contraste con muebles de madera oscura, cuero negro y los patrones coloridos de los pavimentos hidráulicos originales, que marcan las huellas del pasado; a la vez, la introducción de espejos en las paredes añade reflejos y transparencias que prolongan la relación con el verde exterior. Por su parte, la zona privada, en contacto con la tierra, ofrece una atmósfera más íntima y recogida, con suelos de madera y revestimientos en tonos suaves entre el beige y el verdemar. La escalera original se resignifica mediante un tratamiento de color azul Klein, que la eleva de elemento funcional a experiencia espacial, aportando un gesto cromático que articula el interior.

En el exterior, el jard.n combina la vegetación existente con especies mediterráneas de bajo riego. Los muros delimitantes recuperan su piedra original y se cubren con una malla metálica para plantas trepadoras que, con el tiempo, generarán distintos niveles de sombra e integrarán arquitectura y naturaleza en un espacio natural envolvente. El estudio también ha conservado la fachada con revoque tradicional, añadiendo algunos elementos que aportan textura, como los vierteaguas de cerámica de La Bisbal y las icónicas persianas de Persiana Barcelona.

La geometr.a zigzagueante, sello característico del estudio, se inspira en el relieve natural y se extiende tanto al exterior, donde aparecen en los caminos, la fuente y el pilar oblicuo del mirador, como al interior, en la cocina y las baldas, dando continuidad a lenguaje de la vivienda.

Por último, la mejora energ.tica ha sido un eje fundamental de la reforma. La casa se aísla completamente, revestida interiormente, con solera separada y cubierta acondicionada, para minimizar las pérdidas energéticas. Además, incorpora un sistema de climatización por aerotermia y aprovecha el agua de lluvia recogida en la cubierta para el riego. Una arquitectura consciente, centrada en el confort y la eficiencia.

Villa Parque de h3o architects es un homenaje a la memoria y al presente; preserva con cuidado el alma doméstica original mientras establece un diálogo entre lo existente y lo nuevo, dando lugar a una casa que, como sus habitantes, regresa a los orígenes con una mirada renovada.
