Villa Sensorium – Inspired by forest’s textures
Set within the primeval forest of Yakushima Island, the villa is conceived as a landscape rather than an object — an inhabitable topography shaped by rain, gravity, and time. The architectural form is inspired by the mountain ridges of the island, split and eroded by waterfalls that flow between them. This idea is translated into a continuous curved roof, gently folded and cut along its axis by a linear surface inspired by flowing water. This central element acts as both separator and connector, defining the spatial and experiential heart of the house. The “water surface” becomes a skylight that draws daylight deep into the interior, landing directly onto a large communal dining table — the symbolic and social center of the villa. Rain falling onto this opening is not hidden or diverted, but revealed, framed, and amplified: it can be seen, heard, and felt, turning rainfall into a daily ritual rather than a climatic inconvenience. As the central surface extends outward, it transforms seamlessly into a long, linear swimming pool, echoing the movement of a stream descending from the mountains toward the sea. Rainwater is collected and guided along the architecture, shaping a curved outdoor terrace where water gathers and flows, reinforcing the constant presence of rain in both exterior and interior spaces. At one end of this water axis lies the communal life of the house; at the other, the master bedroom, partially sunken into the terrain. This space opens quietly toward the dense, moss-covered forest, creating an intimate, protected atmosphere inspired by the deep greens and soft textures of Yakushima’s ancient ecosystem. Here, architecture dissolves into landscape, evoking the sensation of being embedded within the forest floor. The villa draws its form from the island’s dramatic meeting of sea and mountain. The roofline curves as gently as Yakushima’s mist-wrapped ridges, while a central incision recalls the force of water that shapes the island’s valleys and water falls. This carved void becomes a living threshold between two halves of the villa—an atrium of light, rain, and shadow that mirrors the island’s raw and ever-changing climate. By embracing natural forces rather than resisting them, the villa becomes an extension of Yakushima’s timeless ecology.
