Clichy | Petit Jour Architecture

Located in a former artists' atelier complex in the 18th arrondissement of Paris, steps from the Moulin Rouge, this 33 m² studio was delivered as an empty shell with only basic electrical and plumbing connections in place. The residence dates back to the first half of the 20th century, when Montmartre was home to thriving creative workshops.

The clients, who live in another apartment within the same residence, envisioned this studio as a multifunctional space for working, hosting family and accommodating overnight guests, with all the comforts of a larger home. The design strategy centres on the generous 3.2 metre ceiling height. Rather than a conventional mezzanine with a loft bed, which would have divided the space too aggressively, the architects created a raised platform housing an office above and a slideaway double bed below.

The bed rolls out on a simple mechanism of tracks and rollers, and the platform is tall enough that bedding can stay in place when tucked away. All service areas (kitchen, bathroom, WC, full-height storage with aged mirror doors) are arranged along the windowless wall, freeing the garden side for the living area and office. The kitchen features brushed stainless steel cabinets, a lava stone countertop with a crackled enamel finish, and a tiled breakfast bar in glossy red burgundy that doubles as a ceramics work surface. The bathroom uses small square tiles in pale blue and caramel with contrasting grout.

Materials were chosen for their industrial character and durability: varnished concrete floors, whitewashed pine for the mezzanine structure, salvaged oak from a train wagon for the desk surface, and powder-coated steel for structural details. The overall effect maintains the raw spirit of the original ateliers while feeling elegant and residential. A 27 m² private garden terrace, designed with Studio Caracterre, extends the living space outdoors.

Situé dans un ancien complexe d'ateliers d'artistes du 18e arrondissement de Paris, à deux pas du Moulin Rouge, ce studio de 33 m² a été livré brut, avec uniquement les raccordements électriques et de plomberie.

La résidence date de la première moitié du 20e siècle, époque où Montmartre abritait de nombreux ateliers créatifs. Les clients, qui vivent dans un autre appartement de la même résidence, ont imaginé ce studio comme un espace multifonctionnel pour travailler, recevoir la famille et accueillir des invités, avec tout le confort d'un logement plus grand. La stratégie de conception s'appuie sur la généreuse hauteur sous plafond de 3,2 mètres.

Plutôt qu'une mezzanine conventionnelle avec lit en hauteur, qui aurait trop fragmenté l'espace, les architectes ont créé une estrade surélevée abritant un bureau en partie haute et un lit double coulissant en partie basse. Le lit se déploie grâce à un simple mécanisme de rails et de roulettes, et la hauteur de l'estrade permet de ranger le lit avec la couette et les oreillers en place. Tous les espaces techniques (cuisine, salle de bain, WC, rangements toute hauteur avec portes en miroir vieilli) sont disposés le long du mur aveugle, libérant le côté jardin pour le séjour et le bureau.

La cuisine présente des meubles bas en inox brossé, un plan de travail en pierre de lave émaillée craquelée, et un bar en carrelage rouge bordeaux brillant qui sert également de surface de travail pour la céramique. Les matériaux ont été choisis pour leur caractère industriel et leur durabilité : sol en béton ciré, pin blanchi pour la structure de la mezzanine, chêne de récupération issu d'un wagon de train pour le plateau du bureau, et acier thermolaqué pour les détails structurels. Une terrasse-jardin privée de 27 m², conçue avec Studio Caracterre, prolonge l'espace de vie à l'extérieur.
