Antònia and Roger’s new house in Poblenou, Barcelona, makes the most of a narrow plot through a functional and efficient layout. Colour accents, gestures drawn from Mediterranean architecture, and a striking blue staircase give the project a distinct identity.

The clients came to us looking for someone who could build a house. However, the project had a rather unusual circumstance: construction had already begun, as Antònia & Roger had developed an initial project with another architect. At that stage, the structure had already been defined, but we could still figure out a layout and the overall look and feel of the house. Despite initial uncertainties, we took on the challenge of adapting to what had already been built, working to the rhythm of the construction process and engaging closely with the family’s needs and expectations.

We distributed the program across the three levels, leaving the common areas on the lower ground floor and the private ones on the other two. The ground floor is conceived as a transitional space between street and patio, with an open kitchen designed as a flexible area. Both the façade and the interior and exterior floors are finished with rectangular beige terracotta tiles, establishing a material continuity that unifies the different spaces.

On the upper floors, a warmer and more domestic atmosphere was created through timber flooring. The connection between these two areas is articulated by a staircase that, on the ground floor, is perceived as a robust volume integrating the bathroom and storage, and which becomes progressively lighter as it rises. Built in metal, its perforations and balustrade filter light from a skylight down to the lower level. The safety of this element was also essential, given the couple’s two young children. The second level accomodates two bedrooms, while the top floor houses a flexible room that functions as a playroom and laundry, opening onto a terrace overlooking the patio.

The introduction of small gestures and details helped to give the project a distinct and cohesive character. We wanted the house to feel luminous and open, and to be flexible enough to support everyday family routines as well as entertaining. Terracotta tiles, built-in furniture and seating give the space timelessness rooted in Mediterranean architecture, while the metal structure in striking blue and the exposed silver heating pipes add a more playful and contemporary feel.

La nueva casa de Antònia y Roger en Poblenou, Barcelona, aprovecha al máximo una parcela estrecha mediante una distribución funcional y eficiente. Acentos de color, gestos tomados de la arquitectura mediterránea y una llamativa escalera azul dan al proyecto una identidad propia.

Los clientes acudieron a nosotros buscando a alguien que pudiera construir una casa. Sin embargo, el proyecto presentaba una circunstancia bastante inusual: la obra ya había comenzado, ya que Antònia y Roger habían desarrollado un proyecto inicial con otra arquitecta. En ese momento, la estructura ya estaba definida, pero aún podíamos replantear la distribución y la atmósfera general de la casa. A pesar de las incertidumbres iniciales, asumimos el reto de adaptarnos a lo ya construido, trabajando al ritmo del la obra y comenzando un estrecho diálogo con la familia para entender sus necesidades y expectativas.

Distribuimos el programa en tres niveles, situando las áreas comunes en la planta baja y las privadas en las dos superiores. La planta baja se concibe como un espacio de transición entre la calle y el patio, con una cocina abierta pensada como un área flexible. Tanto la fachada como los pavimentos interiores y exteriores se resuelven con baldosas rectangulares de terracota beige, estableciendo una continuidad material que unifica los distintos espacios.

En las plantas superiores se creó una atmósfera más cálida y doméstica mediante pavimentos de madera. La conexión entre ambos ámbitos se articula mediante una escalera que, en la planta baja, se percibe como un volumen robusto que integra el baño y espacio de almacenamiento, y que se vuelve progresivamente más ligera a medida que asciende. Construida en metal, sus perforaciones y la barandilla filtran la luz de un lucernario hacia el nivel inferior. La seguridad de este elemento también fue fundamental, dado que la pareja tiene dos hijos pequeños. El segundo nivel alberga dos dormitorios, mientras que la planta superior acoge una sala flexible que funciona como sala de juegos y lavandería, abierta a una terraza con vistas al patio.

La incorporación de pequeños gestos y detalles ayudó a dotar al proyecto de un carácter distintivo y coherente. Queríamos que la casa se percibiera luminosa y abierta, y que fuera lo suficientemente flexible para acompañar tanto la vida cotidiana de la familia como los momentos de encuentro. Las baldosas de terracota, el mobiliario y los bancos integrados aportan una atemporalidad arraigada en la arquitectura mediterránea, mientras que la estructura metálica en un intenso azul y las tuberías de calefacción vistas metálics añaden un tono más lúdico y contemporáneo.
