Texlon® ETFE Façade for the Johan Cruijff Arena
The Amsterdam Arena exemplifies how innovative architecture can successfully merge sustainability with user-focused design. Over the past years, the Johan Cruijff Arena (formerly Amsterdam ArenA) has undergone a significant renovation, transforming both its structure and appearance. As part of this modernisation, the stadium introduced a striking new façade made entirely of Texlon® ETFE. This forward-thinking solution redefines how transparency and efficiency coexist in large-scale venues.

Moreover, a precisely engineered steel structure supports the 2,500 m² Texlon® ETFE foil cushion façade, which consists of two lightweight yet durable ETFE layers. This configuration not only ensures structural stability but also provides superior insulation and long-term clarity. Consequently, the façade enhances the building’s energy performance while simultaneously reducing maintenance requirements.

In addition, the dynamic surface captures natural light during the day and reflects illumination at night, thereby creating an iconic visual identity for the stadium. Ultimately, the new façade has become the arena’s defining feature — a bold statement of innovation and sustainability — and we are proud to be part of the team that made it possible.

Seeing Clearly with ETFE
With the venue’s new Texlon® ETFE façade and its slim supporting steel structure, spectators are protected from the elements while still feeling connected to the surrounding city. Moreover, the façade offers a unique transparency that transforms the spectator’s experience, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior space. From both inside and outside, the structure presents a captivating visual appearance, therefore creating a sense of lightness and openness rarely achieved in large-scale venues.

In addition, the distinctive curvature of the façade is further enhanced by the clever use of materials — transparent foil in the centre and white-tinted foils toward the edges. As a result, the design not only provides visual depth and contrast but also optimises natural daylight and thermal comfort throughout the space.

Ultimately, the Amsterdam Arena’s architecture sets new standards in efficiency, aesthetics, and environmentally conscious construction, proving that innovation and sustainability can seamlessly coexist in modern stadium design.

About the Arena
The large-scale renovation, called Project ArenA 2020, consists of three phases. Phase one concerns the east side of the arena. It includes a 2,500 m² Texlon® ETFE façade by Vector Foiltec to enlarge the lower and upper tier concourses. The phase has been open to the public since the beginning of 2018.

Amsterdam Arena officially became Johan Cruijff Arena. The Amsterdam ArenA officially changed its name to the Johan Cruijff Arena in the late spring, at the start of the 2018-2019 football season. The new logo of the Johan Cruijff ArenA was unveiled on 25 April 2018, the birthday of the legendary footballer Johan Cruijff.
