Yachting design ad alta quota | m2atelier studio

The project, radical refurbishment, refers to a mountain apartment in the historic center of Aprica, the well-known ski resort in Valtellina. The flat, located on the fifth floor of a typical late 1960s residential building, features an exciting sequence of panoramic views of the woods and peaks all around.

The original plan, developed along the single glass front, presented very tight constraints with limited operational margins, comparable in some ways to the hyper-compressed spaces that must be faced in yacht design. To conceive the new layout, m2atelier decided to export the nautical approach to high altitudes, re-contextualizing methods and strategies usually employed for yacht projects in Aprica.
As in those cases, here too the primary objective was to reclaim quality space where there was none, resetting the distribution of the rooms to exalt their volumetric dimension.

The apartment was therefore emptied of all existing elements and partitions except for the load-bearing pillars and the dividing wall between the kitchen and the single room, where systems are located. Starting from this tabula rasa the spaces were recomposed following a fluid, and unbridled logic: the idea was to generate uninterrupted perspectives, reating mobile contexts, separated but not divided, to always offer an overall reading of all the areas. Every centimeter has been maximized and exploited beyond limits, to achieve levels of comfort and living generosity originally unimaginable, finally adequate for a contemporary home.

The apartment opens onto a conversation pit dominated by a large L-shaped sofa and a dark metal pellet stove. The body of the IT, custom-designed, represents a functional design piece: thanks to the ducting hidden by the partial lowering of the ceiling, running along the entire layout of the house, the stove is able to heat every room. In front of the sofa, the kitchen embodies an essential ecosystem, realised with a few selected materials and delimited by an equipped wall with double opening which also defines, on the other side, the perimeter of the corridor. The kitchen finishes represent a perfect synthesis of the minimal style adopted in the refurbishment: the wood-effect bi-laminate doors revive one of the typical materials of the mountain grammar, while the smoked mirrored finish wall cabinets send small reflections of the panorama.

The anthracite Savoy stone slab of the backsplash offers continuity with the refined worktop and the lower compartments dedicate to storage. The dining table, also in anthracite tone, is integrated into a sculptural triangular shelf structure, from which however it can always be separated. The structure, custom designed - like almost all the details and furnishings of the house - incorporates one of the supporting pillars.

The sleeping area, reachable through a corridor defined by the long axis of the storage, finds its vanishing point in the dark door that opens and closes the access to the main bedroom. Hidden along the storage wall is the entrance door to the smaller room. To organize it comfortably, including also a private bathroom, everything has been redefined with millimetric precision and maximum care: the single bed equipped with an additional pullman bed, the wardrobe mirrored to amplify the depth, the bookcase separating the sleeping area from the study and the French window on the terrace, the desk with a rounded corner, the bathroom with the window that cuts out and reflects a small slice of landscape on the mirror. Despite the extreme compactness of the volumes, the room is bright, proportionate, and comfortable. 

At the end of the corridor a small study functions as a foyer for the master bathroom and bedroom. The first is set in a space drawn from almost nothing, characterized by a stopsol sliding door that alternately closes the toilet and the shower. Inside the shower compartment, a slit, traced in the shared wall, enables a glimpse of the master bedroom towards the window onto the terrace, providing a fragment of the panorama also to the intimacy of the bathroom. The master bedroom is designed around the elegant anthracite strip headboard (a recurring detail in m2atelier's works) which borders the bathroom. The shaped console becomes a desk with a view of the mountains, while the pivoting door of the wardrobe, near the entrance, can also become a separating door between the bedroom and the bathroom, when greater privacy is needed.

It is impossible to fully describe Aprica apartment without taking note of the terraces that border its perimeter: widening in some strategic points, they form real external lounges overlooking the peaks. 

The compact dimensions of the house influenced the choice of the formal lexicon, suggesting avoiding the redundant aesthetics of the mountain refuge in favor of a reduced and essential lexicon both in materials and finishes, according to the thesis of less is enough which is one of the watermarks of m2atelier. By lightening the style, making it disappear behind the selected rigor of shapes and shades, the designers managed to enhance the articulation of the spaces and the rhythm of the views, allowing the natural scenario to play a leading role in every point of the house.

Un progetto di refurbishing radicale che riguarda un appartamento di montagna nel centro storico di Aprica, la nota località sciistica posata su un panoramico valico tra la Valtellina e la Valcamonica nel cuore delle Alpi Orobie e Retiche Meridionali.

Situata al quinto piano di un tipico edificio residenziale della fine anni Sessanta, la casa è dotata di un’emozionante sequenza di viste panoramiche sui boschi e sulle vette tutt’intorno.

La pianta originale, impacchettata lungo l’unico fronte vetrato, presentava vincoli strettissimi con margini operativi molto limitati, paragonabili in qualche modo agli spazi ipercompressi che si affrontano nello yacht design.
Per concepire il nuovo layout lo studio di architettura m2atelier ha deciso di esportare l’approccio nautico ad alta quota, ricontestualizzando ad Aprica i metodi e le strategie solitamente utilizzate per i progetti degli yacht.
Come in quei casi, anche qui l’obiettivo primario era estrarre spazio di qualità laddove non c’era, reimpostando la distribuzione degli ambienti per valorizzarne la dimensione volumetrica. 

L’appartamento è stato perciò svuotato di tutti gli elementi e le partizioni esistenti ad eccezione dei pilastri portanti e della parete divisoria tra la cucina e la stanza singola, dove sono alloggiati gli impianti. A partire da questa tabula rasa gli spazi sono stati ricomposti seguendo una logica fluida e disruptive: l’idea è quella di originare prospettive ininterrotte, creando contesti mobili, separati ma non divisi, per offrire sempre una lettura complessiva di tutti gli ambiti. Ogni centimetro è stato massimizzato e sfruttato oltre il limite, per raggiungere livelli di comfort e di una generosità abitativa inimmaginabili in partenza e finalmente adeguati a una casa contemporanea.

L’appartamento si apre su una conversation pit dominata dal grande divano a L e dalla stube a pellet in metallo scuro. La scocca della stube in lamiera è stata disegnata su misura per trasformarla in un pezzo di design funzionale: grazie alla canalizzazione nascosta dal ribassamento parziale del soffitto, che attraversa per lungo tutta la pianta della casa, la stufa è in grado di riscaldare ogni stanza. Di fronte al divano la cucina è un ecosistema essenziale: è costituita di pochi, selezionati materiali e delimitata da una parete attrezzata con doppia apertura che definisce anche, dall’altro lato, il perimetro del corridoio. Le finiture della cucina rappresentano una sintesi perfetta dello stile minimale adottato nel refurbishment: gli sportelli in laminato effetto legno riattualizzano uno dei materiali tipici della grammatica della montagna, mentre i pensili in finitura specchiata fumé riflettono sulla superficie piccoli riverberi di panorama. Un backsplash composto da una lastra in gres porcellanato con finitura pietra di savoia bocciardata color antracite va in continuità con il raffinato piano di lavoro e con i vani inferiori

dedicati allo stivaggio. Il tavolo da pranzo, sempre in gres antracite, è integrato in una scultorea struttura a scaffali triangolare, da cui però è sempre possibile separarlo. La struttura, disegnata su misura -come del resto quasi tutti i dettagli e gli arredi della casa- ingloba al suo interno uno dei pilastri della casa.

La zona notte si raggiunge attraverso un corridoio definito dal lungo asse dello storage e trova il suo punto di fuga sulla porta scura che apre e chiude l’accesso alla main bedroom. Nascosta lungo la parete dello storage si trova invece la porta di ingresso alla camera più piccola. Per organizzarla in modo confortevole, alloggiandovi anche un bagno privato, tutto è stato ridefinito con millimetrica precisione e massima cura: il letto singolo, attrezzato con un ulteriore pullman bed, l’armadio specchiato fumé per amplificare la profondità, la libreria che separa la zona sleeping dallo studio e dalla porta finestra sulla terrazza, la scrivania con un angolo arrotondato, il bagno con la finestra che ritaglia e riflette sullo specchio una piccola fetta di paesaggio. Nonostante l’estrema compattezza dei volumi la camera risulta luminosa, proporzionata e comoda.

Alla fine del corridoio il bagno e la camera master. Il primo è caratterizzato da una porta scorrevole stopsol che chiude alternativamente la toilette e la doccia. All’interno del vano doccia una finestra, tracciata nella parete condivisa, traguarda la master bedroom verso la vetrata sul terrazzo, consegnando un frammento di panorama anche all’intimità del bagno. La camera padronale è disegnata attorno all’elegante testiera in listellino in legno (un dettaglio ricorrente nei lavori di m2atelier) che confina con il bagno. La consolle sagomata diventa una scrivania con vista sulle montagne, mentre l’anta pivotante dell’armadio, nei pressi dell’entrata, può diventare anche una porta di separazione tra la camera e il bagno, quando serve maggiore privacy.

È impossibile descrivere con completezza l’appartamento di Aprica senza tenere conto delle terrazze che ne bordano il perimetro: allargandosi in alcuni punti strategici, formano dei veri salotti esterni affacciati sulle vette.

Le dimensioni compatte della casa hanno condizionato la scelta del lessico formale, suggerendo di sottrarsi all’estetica ridondante del rifugio di montagna in favore di vocabolario ridotto ed essenziale sia nei materiali che nelle finiture, secondo la tesi del less is enough che è uno dei brand watermark di m2atelier. Alleggerendo lo stile, facendolo sparire dietro il rigore selezionato delle forme e delle tonalità, i progettisti sono riusciti a valorizzare la scansione degli spazi e il ritmo delle viste, permettendo al panorama di giocare un ruolo da protagonista in ogni punto della casa.
