The design of the new bivouac near the Capanna Bernasconi, in the heart of the Stelvio National Park, stems from the idea of reinterpreting the archetype of the mountain bivouac with a contemporary architectural language, while maintaining a strong link with the original function and location.

The main inspiration comes from the mountain itself, conceived as a generative matrix of form. The bivouac is configured as a rocky fragment modelled by the natural elements: a sculpture emerging from the ground, wrapped in a monolithic shell that encloses and protects the internal volume: hence the name fragm[o]unt, the cross between fragment and mountain.

The load-bearing structure is made of steel elements with insulated sandwich-packet infills. The outer cladding of metallic material not only ensures durability and protection from the elements but also blends into the natural surroundings with its dark grey colour.

The main entrance, facing south towards the footpath, is protected by an eaves overhang with an integrated bench. On the west side, a large panoramic window opens onto the valley, flooding the living area with light and offering a breathtaking view; the east elevation, on the other hand, has a smaller opening that provides natural light and ventilation for the sleeping area. In addition, this same elevation houses a staircase leading to a secondary emergency access.

Inside, the spaces are designed according to criteria of maximum functionality: to the left of the entrance is the living area, furnished with a table and fixed benches overlooking the panoramic window; to the right is the sleeping area, organised with bunk beds with mobile ladders on metal frames, for a total of 9 places. In the event of an emergency, the benches in the living area can be used as two more beds, and the entrance area can accommodate a stretcher.

Shelves and spaces for the orderly storage of personal belongings and mountaineering equipment complete the sleeping area. In addition, these spaces accommodate the first-aid kit, books, magazines, provisions and everything else you need. To ensure energy self-sufficiency, the bivouac is equipped with photovoltaic panels connected to storage batteries placed underneath the fixed benches in the living area and equipped with sockets. It is also equipped with lighting points.

Every detail has been studied to optimise space, combining comfort, practicality and aesthetics.

The result is a bivouac that combines tradition and innovation: a sculptural form in dialogue with the environment, sustainable construction solutions and high technical performance. An essential but cosy refuge that preserves the soul of a high-altitude garrison, offering protection, functionality and an authentic experience of immersion in nature.
